Asheville day trips run from a 20-minute drive to Black Mountain to a long day over to Cherokee and Newfound Gap. The easy ones are the waterfalls near Brevard, Chimney Rock and the small towns of Black Mountain and Flat Rock. Max Patch and the Smokies side are the long ones, so give each its own day.
We have used Asheville as a base with nieces and nephews along, and one rule holds up. I would pair a waterfall morning with a town afternoon, and keep the high ridges for clear days. Every fee, hour and closure below is as each agency or operator page listed it on October 3, 2026, so check the page again before you drive.
Asheville day trips
The table lists all ten trips with a rough drive time from downtown Asheville in light traffic. The last column is the thing to check before you leave. Details follow in drive-time order.
| Day trip | Drive from Asheville | Best for | Plan around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Mountain | About 20 minutes | Small-town browsing | Pair it with a lake loop or a trail |
| Flat Rock and Hendersonville | 30 to 40 minutes | A free historic home and farm | House tours depend on staffing |
| Chimney Rock and Lake Lure | About 45 minutes | Views over the lake | Timed entry; several trails closed |
| Brevard waterfalls | 45 to 60 minutes | Looking Glass Falls and DuPont | DuPont lots fill early |
| Mount Mitchell and Craggy Gardens | 30 to 60 minutes | High ridges and fall color | Parkway closures |
| Hot Springs | About 1 hour | The Appalachian Trail town and a soak | Small town, short visit |
| Max Patch | About 1 to 1.5 hours | A grassy bald with wide views | Small lot, forest and state roads |
| Cherokee | About 1 hour | Elk and the Smokies south entrance | Parking tag over 15 minutes |
| Bryson City and Deep Creek | About 1 hour 15 minutes | Waterfalls and quiet trails | Tubing not recommended |
| Newfound Gap | About 1 hour 45 minutes | The Smokies crest road | Long day; seasonal Kuwohi Road |
Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell lean on the Blue Ridge Parkway being open. Cherokee and Newfound Gap can use it too, as a slower option.
Best day trips from Asheville NC
These ten run in drive-time order. Each gets what it is good for and one honest reason to skip it.
Black Mountain NC
Black Mountain is the shortest drive on the list, about 20 minutes east of Asheville by Explore Asheville’s count. Its town page describes a walkable downtown of galleries, cafés and independent shops, with lake loops and trail views nearby. It makes a good half day.
Skip it if you came for big scenery, because this one is a stroll, not a summit.

Flat Rock NC
Flat Rock is the pick for a history stop with no admission. Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site charges no entrance fee, and the park says house tours are free, first come, first served, at 11, 12, 1, 2 and 3, depending on staffing. The grounds and trails are open sunrise to sunset, and the farm keeps goats.
On the date checked, the restrooms near the house were closed after Hurricane Helene damage, with portable toilets set up instead. Hendersonville is next door for lunch. Skip Flat Rock if you want a hike with a view, since the walks here are gentle.

Chimney Rock and Lake Lure
Chimney Rock is the classic view over Lake Lure, and it is a good late-season color trip. The park’s ticket page listed adult admission at $17 and ages 5 to 15 at $8, with children 4 and under free, on the date checked. Entry runs on one-hour arrival windows, and the page recommends a reservation for October through early November. Our Chimney Rock State Park guide covers the trails.
The state park’s status page said on the date checked that the main access was open seven days a week with timed entry. It also said Eagle Rock Access was closed until further notice, along with the Weed Patch Mountain, Tunnel and Riverwalk trails, and that Buffalo Creek Park in Lake Lure remained closed. Skip it on a day you cannot reserve, or if you are counting on a trail from an older guidebook, because several are shut.

Brevard NC
Brevard is the waterfall town, and three stops sit close together. Looking Glass Falls has no fee and limited parking, and the Forest Service asks you not to park in the road. Its page lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from April 1 through November 15, with stairs down to the creek from the top viewing deck.
Sliding Rock costs $6 per person on the Forest Service page, with ages 5 and under free. Lifeguards run only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so from fall through spring the staffed season is over and it is a look, not a swim. See our Sliding Rock guide and the longer waterfalls near Asheville list.
DuPont State Recreational Forest opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., and its lots are often full by 9:30 a.m. The forest says never to slide on, dive from, jump off or climb its waterfalls. Its closures page, last updated June 26, 2026, listed the Triple Falls stairs as closed with no end date.
Mount Mitchell
Craggy Gardens is about 30 minutes up the Parkway, and Mount Mitchell is roughly an hour out. Mount Mitchell State Park charges no day-use fee, and the 6,684-foot summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. Park hours run from 7 a.m. to between 6 and 10 p.m. depending on season, and the park closes Christmas Day.
The park’s restaurant was listed as closed for the season beginning August 4, 2026, with the concession stand open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The same page warns of frequent and prolonged winter closures at this elevation. Skip the high ridges on a day of low cloud, because the view is the whole point. Our Mount Mitchell guide and Craggy Gardens guide have the stops.
Hot Springs NC
Hot Springs is the only North Carolina town where the Appalachian Trail passes through downtown. The town’s visitor site also calls it home to the only natural hot springs in the state. The town sits where Spring Creek meets the French Broad River, and rafting outfitters work the river.
It is a soak-and-stroll day. Skip it if you want a long afternoon of things to browse, because the town is small.
Max Patch
Max Patch is a grassy mountain bald with 360-degree views, and the Appalachian Trail crosses its summit. It is one of the longer drives here, an hour or more, partly on forest and state roads. Explore Asheville tells drivers to make sure the road is passable for their vehicle, especially in winter, and I would download offline maps before leaving town.
The Forest Service page lists no fee, a lot for about 11 cars, and no parking on the road when it fills. The area closes one hour after sundown and reopens one hour before sunrise. Camping and fires are not allowed, groups are limited to 10 and dogs go on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Skip it if you cannot walk a short bald in wind, because the summit has no trees for shelter.

Cherokee NC
Cherokee is the south gateway to the Smokies. The park’s Oconaluftee area sits beside town and the Qualla Boundary, and it hosts one of the park’s two main elk herds. The Mountain Farm Museum has a self-guiding booklet that walks you past the historic buildings, and the Museum of the Cherokee People is just outside the park nearby. See things to do in Cherokee for the rest.
The park requires a tag for any vehicle parked longer than 15 minutes, and its fee page lists $5 daily, $15 weekly and $40 annual. Our parking tag guide has the buying steps. Skip Cherokee if you want quiet on a fall weekend, because this is the busy gateway.
Bryson City NC
Bryson City is the quieter Smokies gateway, and Deep Creek sits just north of town. The park calls the area celebrated for its streams and waterfalls, and trails reach cascades such as Juney Whank Falls. It also has picnic areas, a campground and some of the few park trails open to bikes. Our Deep Creek guide has the loop.
The park says swimming and tubing are not recommended in its waters. Skip Deep Creek if tubing was the plan.
Newfound Gap
Newfound Gap is the crest of the Smokies road, and it is the longest day on the list, about an hour and 45 minutes each way through Cherokee. The park’s seasonal schedule said Newfound Gap Road (US 441) is open year-round, weather permitting. It listed Kuwohi Road, the former Clingmans Dome Road, as opening April 1 and closing November 29, subject to snow and ice.
That page was dated April 20, 2026, so read the park’s current conditions page before you go. Skip this trip if your schedule is tight, because the drive eats the day. See Newfound Gap Road for the stops along it.
Day trips from Asheville
Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell are the trips that depend on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In early October 2026 the park’s closures page listed the Mount Mitchell area from milepost 344.2 to 355.3 as closed for a Helene-related closure, with recreation prohibited in that section. It also listed the Craggy Gardens picnic area, mileposts 364.5 to 367.6, as closed while the Parkway stayed open there.
It listed USFS Road 63 at milepost 367.6 as closed until further notice, and the segments from Craggy Gardens through Waterrock Knob and Black Balsam as open. Those statuses change, so treat them as history and check the page the day before you drive. Our Parkway road closures guide explains how to read the list.
Everything else on the list reaches its trailhead by interstate, US highway or state road. If the Parkway is shut, Chimney Rock, Brevard, Flat Rock, Hot Springs, Max Patch and the Smokies side all still work. Our Asheville to Cherokee Parkway guide has the route if you want it one way.
Day trips near Asheville NC
Pairing works when both stops sit on the same side of town. I would not stack two long drives.
- Brevard waterfalls in the morning, then Flat Rock in the afternoon.
- Max Patch first, then a soak in Hot Springs on the way home.
- Cherokee for the elk and the Mountain Farm Museum, then Deep Creek near Bryson City.
- Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, then a Hendersonville dinner.
Skip pairing Newfound Gap with anything else. It is a full day on its own.
Day trips near Asheville
With half a day, I would pick Black Mountain, Craggy Gardens or Flat Rock. Each is about 30 minutes or less from town, and none needs an early start.
For rain, pick covered stops. The Sandburg house tour is free and first come, Black Mountain has galleries to browse, Hot Springs has the mineral-water soak, and Biltmore Estate has its own guide. The waterfalls look better after rain, but wet rock is slick, so stay on the stairs and decks at Looking Glass Falls. More ideas sit in our things to do in Asheville guide.
Day trips from Asheville NC
From late October on, I would spend a Saturday on the Chimney Rock side and save the high ridges for a clear day earlier in the fall. Explore Asheville’s 2026 fall guide says first color reaches high points like Craggy Gardens, Mount Mitchell and Graveyard Fields in late September, and Asheville by mid to late October. It says color drops below 2,000 feet by early November, and names Chimney Rock State Park and Gorges State Park as good late bets.
By that timeline, the highest ridges are usually past peak by late October, and the lower side is the better bet. Our western North Carolina road trip covers a longer loop.
What is there to do near Asheville?
How many days do you need in Asheville NC?
Give the city itself two days, then add one day for each trip you want from this list. Brevard is best for waterfalls, Chimney Rock or Max Patch for views, Black Mountain or Flat Rock for a town day, and Cherokee or Bryson City for the Smokies. Check the closure list before each one.
How far is Chimney Rock from Asheville?
About 45 minutes by car. Allow longer on a fall weekend, since the park suggests a reservation for October through early November.
How far is Max Patch from Asheville?
Plan on an hour or more by car, partly on forest and state roads that can be rough in winter. The lot holds about 11 cars, so start early and pair it with Hot Springs on the way home.
Is Max Patch open?
In early October 2026 the Forest Service page listed a restrictions notice rather than a closure. The area closes one hour after sundown and reopens one hour before sunrise, so check the page again before you go.
