Channel Islands National Park is five islands off Ventura, California, and you reach them by boat. The easy first trip is a day on Santa Cruz or Anacapa, and the park charges no entrance fee. Plan around the boat schedule and the wind, not around the trail map.

Boat days are their own kind of trip, and I have done plenty of them: snorkeling reefs in the Keys, rafts and canoes on Colorado whitewater, and boat days with nieces and nephews along. The lessons carry over. The morning boat beats the afternoon one, the wind is stronger than the forecast number, and the water is colder than it looks. Here I would take the morning crossing and pack for wind.

Is Channel Islands National Park worth it?

I would call it worth the planning if you want a Southern California day with no cars and no stores. The park’s fees page says an entrance pass is not required. Its conditions page also bars motorized vehicles and bicycles from the islands. So the day is a boat, a trail and quiet.

The islands are also a refuge. The island fox lives nowhere else on earth, and NPS describes it as housecat-sized. Santa Cruz Island has eight plant species found nowhere else in the world. Those foxes and plants are the reason to go.

Be honest about the catch, though. Every trip depends on a captain’s call about the sea, and landing on Anacapa is not guaranteed. Anyone who gets seasick on a pond should read the crossing section before booking.

How many islands are in Channel Islands National Park?

Five: Anacapa, Santa Barbara, San Miguel, Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa. Fares below are the round-trip day-trip prices on Island Packers’ Ventura trips page, checked October 3, 2026.

San Miguel is the far end of the park. Island Packers says most trips there carry campers only, with day trips once or twice a year in October. The park page describes an all-day ranger-guided visit and a 16-mile round trip to Point Bennett, where over 30,000 seals and sea lions gather at certain times of year.

Santa Barbara Island is the smallest, at one square mile. Its page mentions thousands of nesting western gulls, some right beside the trail.

Santa Cruz Island day trip

Santa Cruz is the one I would start with. It is California’s largest island, and the park manages the eastern 24 percent while The Nature Conservancy manages the rest. Island Packers lists Scorpion Anchorage at about one hour from Ventura and Prisoners Harbor at about 1½ hours. The fare is $72 for adults, $67 for seniors and military, and $52 for children.

Scorpion is the closer landing, and the Cavern Point and Potato Harbor hikes start from its beach. Prisoners Harbor is farther west. Island Packers warns there is no potable drinking water at Prisoners Harbor, so carry the whole day’s supply. Also, there are no stores or restaurants on the island.

Then there is Painted Cave, one of the largest and deepest sea caves in the world, nearly a quarter mile long. Island Packers says the boats returning from Santa Rosa pass it. Ask about the cave when you book, because routes vary by trip.

Santa Cruz Island kayaking

NPS calls Scorpion Beach a world-class sea kayaking destination, but it is the part of the park to take seriously. NPS says sea kayaking has caused the death of park visitors. It tells novices not to paddle on their own and recommends an authorized guide.

At Scorpion, the park points visitors to Channel Islands Adventure Company for guided tours. There are no kayak rentals on the island. Beginners can find guided trips, though NPS calls them moderate to strenuous.

Wetsuits are highly recommended. NPS puts ocean temperatures from the lower 50s in winter to the upper 60s in fall. That is colder than most people expect from Southern California, and it is why I would pick a guided snorkel or paddle over wading in on my own.

Anacapa Island day trip

Anacapa is a small island with a stiff landing. Island Packers says you climb a ladder from the dock and then 157 stairs to the plateau. The island has a two-mile trail system, a 1932 lighthouse and a visitor center displaying the original lead-crystal Fresnel lens.

Landing is not guaranteed. The vessel captain makes the final call on site, and Island Packers says that if a landing fails, the trip continues as a half-day wildlife cruise with ticket costs prorated. Arrive at the harbor 45 minutes before departure.

Season matters here. Western gulls begin nesting at the end of April, hatch chicks in May and June, and fledge them in July, so give them room. Island Packers calls October and November the optimal months, with fewer crowds. It also says spring wind raises the odds of cancellation.

Channel Islands hiking

Santa Cruz has the most day-hike choices. These are NPS distances for the eastern end, and each is round trip from the landing. From Scorpion Anchorage:

  • Historic Ranch, 0.5 mile, easy
  • Cavern Point Loop, 2 miles, moderate
  • Potato Harbor, 5 miles, moderate
  • Scorpion Canyon Loop, 4.5 miles, moderate to strenuous
  • Smugglers Cove, 7.5 miles, strenuous

From Prisoners Harbor, NPS lists a 0.5-mile easy walk, Del Norte Overlook at 3 miles, moderate, and Pelican Bay at 4 miles, moderate to strenuous. I would pick Cavern Point if the return boat is the clock you are watching. NPS says to go clockwise from the campground to avoid the steep climb.

Santa Rosa is rougher. NPS describes its paths as unmaintained, rugged and unsigned, and Anacapa’s as maintained, relatively flat and signed. For any island, NPS says to carry at least a quart of water for short walks, to stay on trails and to watch for poison oak, cholla, ticks and scorpions.

How to avoid seasickness on a boat

Start with the weather, because the park warns of high winds, fog, rough seas and sea spray at any time. NPS says winds are usually calmest in the early morning and build in the afternoon. The outer islands, Santa Rosa and San Miguel, get the strongest gusts. Anacapa, eastern Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara are more moderate.

So pick the short crossing first. Island Packers says San Miguel can take 3 to 3.5 hours and often meets rough seas, while NPS says Santa Rosa is about three hours and that 30-knot winds are not uncommon. Scorpion is about one hour.

The boat rules are plain. Book the morning departure, sit low and near the middle of the boat, and eat something light. Keep your eyes on the horizon and put the phone away. If you are prone to motion sickness, ask a pharmacist or doctor before the trip, not on the dock.

Channel Islands National Park camping

The park’s camping page says reservations are required for all campgrounds and open up to six months ahead on recreation.gov. Anacapa has 7 sites with no water, half a mile and 157 stairs from the landing. Santa Cruz has 25 sites plus 6 group sites at Scorpion Canyon, with water, and 6 sites at Prisoners Harbor, without it.

Santa Rosa’s Water Canyon has 15 sites, water and flush toilets, 1½ miles from the pier. San Miguel has 9 sites and Santa Barbara has 10, both without water, on steep trails. All food and trash go in animal-proof containers, campfires are not allowed, and you cook on a chemical-fuel stove. Our national park camping checklist covers the rest of the kit.

Santa Rosa needs a dated warning. The park’s fire recovery page, updated September 23, 2026, says day use resumed July 1 with burned areas still closed. Overnight use stayed closed through October 13, 2026, and camping reopened after that at Water Canyon and in the northwest and southwest backcountry. The southeast quadrant stays closed for the rest of the 2026 season, so check the page again before you book.

Channel Islands whale watching

The park lists gray whales from mid- to late December through mid-March. Blue and humpback whales are most commonly seen in summer, and common dolphins appear all year. So winter is whale season on the way to the islands, and summer and fall are better for the water.

NPS says to stay at least 100 yards from whales unless the whale chooses to approach the boat. From shore, it recommends early morning, before wind puts whitecaps on the water. The Ventura visitor center also has a tower with telescopes.

Is Catalina part of the Channel Islands?

Catalina is one of the eight Channel Islands, but it is not in the national park. The park holds the five northern islands. Catalina is a separate trip with a different boat, so use our Catalina day trip guide if that is the island you want.

Santa Barbara is the other gateway. The park lists the Outdoors Santa Barbara Visitor Center at 113 Harbor Way, 4th floor, open 10:30 to 4:30 daily. Our Santa Barbara weekend itinerary fits a night there before a boat day. Truth Aquatics, based in Santa Barbara, lists one-day Island Adventure trips from April through September.

What to pack for Channel Islands National Park

The park weather page gives highs in the mid-60s and lows in the low 50s. It recommends layers: short and long pants, a fleece or sweatshirt, a windbreaker, a hat, sunscreen and a waterproof outer layer. It also says fall brings the best chance of warm weather and calm seas, though October may bring strong Santa Ana winds.

Wear sturdy shoes with non-slip soles. Bring all your food, all your water and a bag for your trash, because there are no stores and drinking water is not available on most islands.

The conditions page lists what cannot go to the islands: pets, single-use plastic bags, live plants, soil, cut flowers, untreated wood including hiking sticks, motorized vehicles and bicycles. So leave the dog home.

How do you get to Channel Islands National Park?

You take a boat from Ventura Harbor, where the park’s Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center sits at 1901 Spinnaker Drive. The park lists it as open 8:30 to 5 daily, closed Thanksgiving and December 25. Island Packers runs the Ventura trips above and lists a satellite office in Oxnard.

How long is the boat ride to Santa Cruz Island?

Island Packers lists about one hour from Ventura to Scorpion Anchorage and about 1½ hours to Prisoners Harbor. Trips that combine stops can take two hours or longer.

Is there an entrance fee for Channel Islands National Park?

No. The park’s fees page says an entrance pass is not required. You still pay for the boat, and camping reservations are made on recreation.gov.

Can you camp on Santa Rosa Island?

Yes, on parts of it. After a 2026 fire closure, the park’s fire recovery page opened Water Canyon Campground and the northwest and southwest backcountry for dates after October 13, 2026. The southeast quadrant stays closed for the rest of the 2026 season, so check the page before you book.

Where do island foxes live?

Island foxes live on six of the eight Channel Islands, and nowhere else on earth. Three of those islands are in the park: Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel. NPS says an island fox stands 12 to 13 inches tall and weighs 4 to 5 pounds, and that its numbers have recovered since the 1990s.
