Ocoee whitewater rafting is one of the Southeast’s best-known big-water day trips. Most first-timers start on the Middle Ocoee, and the Upper Ocoee is the steeper step up. Trips only run when the Tennessee Valley Authority releases water, so your date has to match its calendar.
I have paddled and rafted whitewater in canoes, kayaks and rafts, and the Ocoee is known for rapids that come nearly back to back. The water is colder than it looks. I would book the Middle for a first Ocoee day.
Ocoee River rafting season
The Ocoee is the most visited whitewater river in the U.S., TVA says, and the dams are the reason. The river rafts on scheduled releases. When TVA does not release water, trips do not run, and outfitters usually reschedule or refund, according to the FAQ at Outdoor Adventure Rafting.
TVA posts a release calendar for each Ocoee dam as a yearly PDF. Its pages warn that schedules can change without notice and that large amounts of water could be discharged at any time. Treat the calendar as the source and your outfitter as the confirmation.
Outfitter calendars show the pattern. On the Middle, trips run weekends from spring into fall, with weekdays added in summer, and Quest Expeditions lists its 2026 season as March 21 through November 1. The Upper runs on summer weekends only, from late spring through Labor Day. Late September brings the Week of Water, when the Middle runs every day.

Middle Ocoee vs Upper Ocoee
Choose by class and by calendar. American Whitewater rates the Middle as Class III for its entirety over 5.5 miles. It rates the Upper as III-IV over 4.3 miles, with a steeper gradient of 50 feet per mile.
| Section | Class (American Whitewater) | Length | When it runs | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Middle Ocoee | III | 5.5 miles | Weekends spring to fall, weekdays added in summer | First-timers and families with kids 12 and up |
| Upper Ocoee | III-IV | 4.3 miles | Summer weekends | Second-day rafters and confident paddlers |
| Full Ocoee | Both sections | Both sections | Select summer weekends | Fit groups who want the whole river in one day |
Outfitter pages vary on ratings, and some describe both sections as Class III and IV. Go by American Whitewater when you compare. The Lower Ocoee has its own TVA calendar for Ocoee No. 1, but guided trips run on the Middle and the Upper, so those are the two this guide covers.

Ocoee River rafting for beginners
The Middle is the pick for a first Ocoee day. It is steady Class III with a guide steering, so your job is to paddle when told and stay in the boat. Outfitters send first-timers there for the same reason.
The Upper suits a second day or a crew that already paddles well. Outland Expeditions describes larger drops and faster water that ask for more powerful paddling from everyone aboard. It also runs through the 1996 Olympic course.
Quest Expeditions says guests should be able to paddle a few minutes at a time over a two-hour stretch and feel comfortable in moving water. It asks pregnant guests not to go. Plan on most of a day, because the time on the water is only part of it.

Ocoee River rafting cost
Outdoor Adventure Rafting lists the Middle from $37 a person, the Upper from $74 and the Full Ocoee from $90 with a catered lunch, as checked on October 2, 2026. Those are starting rates, and the company says pricing changes by date. Expect to pay more on peak days.
| Trip | From | Time door to door | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Middle Ocoee | $37 | About 3.5 hours | Most popular first trip |
| Upper Ocoee | $74 | About 3.5 hours | Olympic section |
| Full Ocoee | $90 | About 6 hours | Both sections, catered lunch |
The company’s trips include a guide, helmet, life jacket, paddle, transportation and a safety briefing. Quest Expeditions adds that its rates do not include a 10% Tennessee State Access and Management Fee. Ask for the all-in total before you book.
What to wear whitewater rafting
Wear quick-drying clothes you do not mind soaking, either swimwear or synthetics, never cotton. Wear shoes that strap on or lace, because Outland Expeditions says no flip-flops. Bring sunglasses with a strap, sunscreen and a dry change of clothes for the ride back.
The released water is cold, and it stays cold on a hot day. I would dress for the water, not the air. In cooler weather outfitters call for a wetsuit or splash jacket, and Outland lists a wet suit on request with its Upper trip, so ask at booking whether one is included or rented.
A road-trip bag helps here, and our national park road trip packing list is a good starting point for the dry change and the cooler.

Ocoee Whitewater Center
The Ocoee Whitewater Center sits where the Upper Ocoee flows through the Olympic course. The Forest Service lists a $3 user fee for the lower lot, free with a Cherokee National Forest annual pass or an America the Beautiful pass. Its recreation area and lower lot are open during daylight hours year-round.
The visitor center burned on April 26, 2022, but the trails and parking areas have reopened. There are vault toilets and no drinking water, so bring your own. The page lists non-motorized boating, swimming, day hiking, mountain biking and picnicking.
The Forest Service’s passes page lists a $30 annual pass for day-use fee areas, including this one. The fee covers parking, not a raft trip, so book rafting with an outfitter. It is still a good stop to see the course.
Ocoee River rafting Chattanooga
The outfitters sit along the river in Polk County, Tennessee. Chattanooga is the closest big city, about an hour away. Knoxville is about two hours, and Atlanta is a little over two.
All three work as a day trip if you leave early. A night nearby takes the pressure off an early check-in, and it gives you a buffer if a release changes.
The river also fits a bigger Tennessee trip. Pair it with the Smokies using our guide to planning a Smoky Mountains trip, or work it into the East Tennessee road trip. The Ocoee is in the Cherokee National Forest, so our Cherokee National Forest horseback riding guide makes a dry second-day option.
Ocoee River facts
Is the Ocoee River running today?
Check TVA’s recreation release calendar and your outfitter’s booking page that morning. TVA’s pages warn that schedules can change without notice, and the river only rafts on release days. If a release is cancelled, outfitters usually reschedule or refund.
How old do you have to be to go white water rafting?
Twelve is the minimum on the Ocoee at Carolina Outfitters, Outland Expeditions and Quest Expeditions. One outfitter’s FAQ describes a life-jacket fit rule instead, generally at least 50 lbs. Ask the outfitter you book, because the rule differs by company.
How long is a white water rafting trip?
Outfitters put the time on the water at about two to three hours for the Middle or the Upper. Door to door, Outdoor Adventure Rafting lists about 3.5 hours for each and about 6 hours for the Full Ocoee with lunch. Outland suggests planning a 5 to 8 hour day once gear-up and the shuttle are counted.
Can you go white water rafting without a guide?
Yes, private boaters run the Middle Ocoee in their own boats on release days. It is Class III throughout, and American Whitewater lists pinning rocks, undercuts and a few nasty swim spots. Private boaters also use a different takeout from the commercial trips, about half a mile farther at the Big Creek Access, so a guided first trip is the smarter start.
