The best 7-day Colorado road trip is a loop out of Denver. It runs Estes Park and Trail Ridge Road, Steamboat and Glenwood for hot springs, the Maroon Bells, Black Canyon, the Million Dollar Highway, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes and Colorado Springs. That is about 1,150 miles and 20 hours of driving. Go between mid-June and late September, when Trail Ridge Road and the high passes are open.

I have driven every leg of this loop, most of them more than once. Some years the point was a raft on the Arkansas or Clear Creek. Other years it was the hot springs, the passes and the Front Range trails. Seven days is enough to see the state properly, if you book the four things that sell out before you leave.

Colorado Road Trip Itinerary

Here is the loop, day by day. Drive times are for a car in summer with no stops. Add an hour on every mountain day for overlooks and traffic.

Colorado Road Trip Loop

Run it clockwise, exactly as the table reads. That puts Trail Ridge Road on day two, when you are still fresh. It saves the two long days for the end, when you know the car and the roads. It also means you drive the Million Dollar Highway southbound, which is the direction most people prefer.

Days 6 and 7 are the heavy ones. If you can add an eighth night, put it in Alamosa or Colorado Springs. If you cannot, skip the Garden of the Gods on day 7 and go straight up I-25.

Colorado Road Trip from Denver

Day 1 is the short one on purpose. Denver sits at 5,280 feet and Estes Park at about 7,500, so a lazy first afternoon helps with the altitude. Hydrate, take it slow, and save the big hike for tomorrow. If you land a day early, the Denver weekend itinerary fills it.

Take US 36 through Boulder and Lyons; it is 65 miles and about 90 minutes. Spend the afternoon on the Estes Park Riverwalk and the evening watching elk in the meadows. Then drive into the park for sunset at Sprague Lake. Our Estes Park guide covers the Stanley Hotel, Lake Estes and the taffy shops.

Book two things before you go. The park’s timed-entry page says a reservation is needed from May 22 through October 12, 2026. Bear Lake Road takes a separate permit through October 18, and each costs a $2 processing fee on Recreation.gov. Our Rocky Mountain timed-entry guide walks through the release dates and the 7 p.m. same-day drop.

Trail Ridge Road

Day 2 starts with the highest continuous paved road in the country. Trail Ridge Road runs 48 miles from Estes Park to Grand Lake and tops out at 12,183 feet. It is closed from mid-October to late May. Leave Estes Park by 8 a.m. with your timed-entry window in hand.

Stop at Forest Canyon Overlook and the Alpine Visitor Center, and take a jacket. It is regularly 30 degrees colder at the top than in town, and the wind up there is serious. Marmots and elk are common along the road. Pull fully off the pavement before you stop to look.

From Grand Lake, US 40 climbs Rabbit Ears Pass and drops into Steamboat Springs, another two hours. In winter the road is closed and the trip looks completely different. Our winter guide to Rocky Mountain National Park explains what stays open.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs

The evening soak in Steamboat is Strawberry Park, a set of rock-lined pools in a creek canyon seven miles outside town. It is the best natural-feeling hot spring on this loop. The water is hot near the inlet and cools pool by pool toward the creek.

Reservations are required and it is cash only. The springs’ own site lists $30 per adult and $20 for ages 17 and under. The last few miles are a rough dirt road. After dark the pools go clothing-optional and minors are not admitted, so families should go in the afternoon.

Steamboat Springs to Glenwood Springs

Day 3 is the easy driving day. It is 115 miles down CO 131 through Yampa and Wolcott to I-70, then west through Glenwood Canyon. The canyon is the prettiest stretch of interstate in the state. Slow down for the Hanging Lake and Grizzly Creek exits, which are worth a stop even without a hike.

Steamboat is worth a morning first. Walk Lincoln Avenue and get a coffee by the Yampa. If the river is running, watch the tubers and kayakers below the C Hole. Then take your time south; there is no rush today.

Glenwood Hot Springs Pool

Glenwood is the opposite of Strawberry Park. It is a huge developed pool, two blocks long, with a hot therapy pool at one end and lap lanes and slides at the other. It is the one everyone in the family will like. The big pool runs warm rather than hot, so most people bounce between it and the therapy pool.

Day passes cost $38 to $55 for adults and $27 to $34 for kids, depending on the date. The resort is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. year round. Our Glenwood Springs cost guide compares it with Iron Mountain Hot Springs across the river. For the full list, we rank both in our roundup of the best hot springs in Colorado.

Maroon Bells Shuttle

Day 4 is the big scenery day, and it starts early. Aspen is 40 miles up CO 82 from Glenwood. The Maroon Bells are 10 miles beyond it at Maroon Lake, 9,580 feet up. It is the most photographed mountain view in Colorado, and it looks the way the postcards do.

You cannot just drive up in summer. Between May 22 and October 18 the road is closed to private cars from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The reservation site (visitmaroonbells.com) sells shuttle seats at $16 per adult and $10 for kids and seniors. A $10 parking reservation covers arrivals before 8 a.m. The shuttle leaves from Aspen Highlands and takes about 15 minutes. Book the earliest slot you can; the lake is calm and the light is best before 9 a.m.

Walk the Maroon Lake Scenic Trail, then the 1.8 miles up to Crater Lake if your legs are willing. Be back at the car by noon. The drive to Black Canyon goes over McClure Pass on CO 133, through Hotchkiss and Delta. It takes about three and a half hours to Montrose.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison

The Painted Wall at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado, with the Gunnison River far below
The Painted Wall from the South Rim, with the Gunnison River a thin line at the bottom.

The South Rim entrance is 15 miles east of Montrose on US 50 and CO 347. Late-afternoon light is when to be there. The canyon is 2,722 feet deep at its deepest and only 40 feet wide at the river. It feels less like a canyon and more like a crack in the earth. Nobody is here. It is the quietest national park on this loop by a wide margin.

South Rim Road is seven paved miles with a dozen overlooks. NPS says it is usually open to vehicles from late April to mid-November. Do Gunnison Point, Pulpit Rock, Chasm View and the Painted Wall, the tallest cliff in Colorado at about 2,250 feet. Two hours covers it. Entry is $30 per vehicle for seven days, and no reservation is needed.

Million Dollar Highway

The Million Dollar Highway, US 550, cut into a mountainside between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado
US 550 between Ouray and Silverton. The shoulder you see is the whole shoulder.

Day 5 is the drive people plan whole trips around. Ouray is 37 miles south of Montrose. The 25 miles from Ouray to Silverton over Red Mountain Pass, at 11,018 feet, are the Million Dollar Highway. There are no guardrails on the worst stretches and the drop-off is right at the white line. Driving south puts you on the inside lane against the cliff, which is the calmer way to do it.

Give Ouray a morning. It is a little Victorian mining town in a box canyon. The big municipal hot springs pool sits at the north end and Box Cañon Falls at the south. Silverton is smaller and rougher, with a dirt main street and the narrow-gauge train pulling in from Durango around midday. Our Million Dollar Highway guide lists every pullout in order with mileage.

Durango is 48 miles past Silverton over Molas and Coal Bank passes, about an hour and a quarter. Plan on two nights here if you can stretch to eight days. Check cotrip.org the morning you leave Ouray. US 550 closes for avalanche control in winter and for rockfall any time of year.

Mesa Verde Cliff Dwelling Tours

Cliff Palace, the stone cliff dwelling under a sandstone alcove at Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado
Cliff Palace from the overlook, the biggest of the Mesa Verde dwellings.

Day 6 starts at Mesa Verde, 35 miles west of Durango on US 160. The cliff dwellings are stone villages from the 1200s, built into sandstone alcoves. Walking into one is the reason to come. The park road climbs 20 twisting miles from the entrance to the dwellings, so budget 45 minutes each way.

Entry is $30 per vehicle from May 1 to October 22 and $20 the rest of the year. Tour tickets are the thing to plan around. Mesa Verde sells them only on Recreation.gov, 14 days ahead at 8 a.m. Mountain time; the park’s tour ticket page has the schedule. The ranger-assisted Long House tour is $8 per person; the backcountry Mug House and Square Tower House tours are $25. Cliff Palace and Balcony House tours are closed for road construction this season, so Long House on Wetherill Mesa is the one to book.

Be out of the park by 1 p.m. The drive to Great Sand Dunes is 230 miles east on US 160 over Wolf Creek Pass, through Pagosa Springs, Del Norte and Alamosa. It takes four and a half hours. Sleep in Alamosa, 35 minutes from the dunes.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Sand dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains behind
The dunefield against the Sangre de Cristo range. The walk to High Dune is farther than it looks.

Day 7 starts before sunrise on the dunes. They are the tallest in North America and they sit against a 13,000-foot mountain range. The park is open 24 hours, so nothing stops you from being on the sand at 6 a.m. That matters. By early afternoon in summer the sand is hot enough to burn bare feet and the wind picks up.

The walk to the top of High Dune is about 2.5 miles round trip. It takes most people two hours, two steps up and one back. Rent a sandboard in Alamosa or at the Oasis store outside the gate; nothing else slides. Medano Creek runs across the sand below the dunes for a few weeks in late May and early June, and the park’s Medano Creek page has the current flow. Entry is $25 per vehicle. Our Great Sand Dunes guide covers Piñon Flats camping and Zapata Falls.

Garden of the Gods

Colorado Springs is 170 miles north on CO 17 and I-25, about three hours. Garden of the Gods is free, and the paved Perkins Central Garden Trail through the red rock fins takes an hour. Our Garden of the Gods guide lists the trails. With a full extra day, the Colorado Springs weekend itinerary adds Pikes Peak and Manitou.

Pikes Peak itself does not fit in a day-7 afternoon. The summit needs three hours by cog railway or a permitted drive, and both sell out. Denver is 70 miles up I-25. That is about an hour and a quarter outside rush hour and two hours in it.

Best Time for Colorado Road Trip

I would drive this loop in the second half of June or in September, and I have done both. Trail Ridge Road, McClure Pass and the Maroon Bells shuttle all need the snow gone. That means the full loop only works from late May to mid-October. July and August add afternoon thunderstorms above treeline and the year’s biggest crowds at the Bells and Bear Lake.

Mid-June gives you Medano Creek still running at the dunes and wildflowers starting on the tundra. Late September gives you gold aspens on McClure Pass and the Million Dollar Highway, cool sand, and half the people. Either way, sunrise starts are the whole trick to the crowded stops.

The cheaper months are the same months. Ski towns like Steamboat and Aspen drop their rates hard between the end of ski season and the Fourth of July, then again after Labor Day. Winter is a different trip. Our Breckenridge vs Keystone comparison and beginner ski resort guide cover that side of the state.

Colorado Road Trip Packing List

Pack for three climates in one car. A summer day here can start at 40 degrees on a pass and end at 95 on the sand. Bring a real jacket, a sun hat and closed-toe shoes for the dunes. Sunscreen and lip balm matter more at 12,000 feet than at the beach. A big water bottle per person is the cheapest altitude fix there is.

Cash for Strawberry Park, a printed reservation for the Bells and a cooler for the long days round it out. Our national park road trip packing list has the full checklist. For the cold months, what to pack for Colorado in winter covers traction devices and the I-70 traction law.

Colorado Road Trip Cost

Fees on this loop add up to a bit over $200 for two adults before gas, food and beds. The four national parks alone come to $115 at the gate. The $80 America the Beautiful pass pays for itself on day 4.

Gas is the other big line; mountain driving in a loaded SUV burns more than the sticker says. Our national park road trip cost breakdown shows how we budget a week like this. Camping at Piñon Flats or Morefield knocks two hotel nights off; the national park camping checklist has what to bring.

With a rafting day to spare, the Arkansas River is a two-hour detour from Colorado Springs or the dunes. We compare the two classic runs in Browns Canyon vs Royal Gorge. Our Arkansas River rafting guide covers every section from Pine Creek to the Gorge.

Colorado Road Trip FAQ

Do you need reservations for Rocky Mountain National Park?

Yes, in summer and early fall. A timed-entry reservation is required to enter most of the park between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., from May 22 through October 12, 2026. The Bear Lake Road corridor needs its own permit from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October 18. Outside those dates you just pay the entrance fee and drive in.

How long does it take to drive around Colorado?

This loop is about 1,150 miles and 20 hours of pure driving, which is why it needs a full week. Colorado is 380 miles across and 280 north to south. The mountain highways run 35 to 55 mph with passes and pullouts, not 75. With fewer than seven days, cut the southwest corner and do a Denver, Estes Park, Glenwood and Colorado Springs loop instead.

Do you need a reservation for Maroon Bells?

Yes, from late May through mid-October. Private cars are barred from Maroon Creek Road between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. You either book a $16 shuttle seat from Aspen Highlands or a $10 parking reservation for an arrival before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. Both go on sale through visitmaroonbells.com, and the early slots sell out.

Is Mesa Verde worth visiting?

Yes, if you book a cliff dwelling tour. It is a long detour if you only see the overlooks. Standing inside Long House or Cliff Palace is a different thing from looking at it across the canyon. Give it four hours including the park road, and buy tickets on Recreation.gov 14 days ahead.
