A Na Pali boat tour costs roughly $180 to $300 per adult in 2026, depending on the boat and the length of the trip. Big catamarans leave from Port Allen on the south shore and run year-round. Rigid rafts leave from Kikiaola Harbor on the west side, closer to the cliffs, and they can slip into the sea caves in calm summer water. There is no road along this coast. A boat, a helicopter or a long permitted hike are the only ways to see it up close.
One warning before anything else. Hurricane Lowell hit Kauai on September 7, 2026, and damaged both harbors the tours use. Check the status section below before you book.
I have been out along the Na Pali on a tour boat and over it in a helicopter, and every photo on this page is mine. Dolphins swam alongside the hull on the way out. Farther up the coast, a waterfall drops straight off the rock into the sea, and a sea arch stands off the cliffs.

Na Pali Coast Ocean Conditions
Not reliably, as of September 21, 2026. Lowell struck overnight on September 7. At the Port Allen small boat harbor, nine boats went missing, two sank and the docks were torn apart, per The Garden Island. Kikiaola Harbor on the west side also took surf damage, and Beat of Hawaii reported both harbors closed with no reopening date on September 16.
The Coast Guard reopened Port Allen Harbor to maritime traffic on September 17, per Hawaii News Now. That is not the same as tours running again. Holoholo Charters, for example, shows every tour canceled from September 9 to 26 on its own site. On land, the state closed six parks after the storm, including Kokee, Waimea Canyon, Haena and the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, per Beat of Hawaii.
So for any trip in the next few weeks, book directly with the operator and ask two questions. Is your harbor open? And what happens to my money if the trip is canceled? We will update this page as the harbors reopen.
Na Pali Coast Boat Tour Cost
Prices below come from each operator’s own site, checked on September 21, 2026. Taxes and fees vary, so treat them as the adult base fare.

| Capt. Andy’s | 65-ft catamaran | Scenic sail | 4.5 hr | $240 |

The cheapest way onto the water is a short raft trip at about $179. The most you are likely to pay is around $295 for the long raft day with a beach landing, or the seven-hour catamaran run out to Niihau. Sunset dinner sails sit in between, at $220 to $260.

Best Na Pali Coast Boat Tour
Book the catamaran if anyone in the group gets seasick, is pregnant, has a bad back or is under six. The big boats are steadier, and the Capt. Andy’s snorkel sail includes a barbecue lunch. Holoholo says its catamarans are too large to enter the sea caves, so you see the caves from outside.
Book the raft if you want the caves and a closer look at the cliffs. Rafts sit low and ride rougher. Capt. Andy’s bars pregnant guests, children under six and anyone with back, neck or mobility problems from its rafts. Na Pali Riders and Holoholo set their minimum at five.
Either way, you see the same coast. The difference is comfort against access.
Na Pali Coast Boat Tour From Port Allen
Three harbors serve this coast, per Hawaii Guide. Port Allen, in Eleele on the south shore, is the year-round base for the large catamarans. The ride to the cliffs is longer from there. Kikiaola, near Waimea and Kekaha on the west side, is where most rafts launch, and it sits much closer to the coast. Hanalei Bay on the north shore runs in summer only, because north-shore swells shrink in summer but never disappear.
Check your pickup point twice, because a Port Allen booking and a Kikiaola booking start at different harbors.

Best Time to Visit Na Pali Coast
May through September, for calm water. That is the window for sea-cave entries and reliable snorkel stops, per Hawaii Guide. Winter swell from the north tends to shut the caves, and Capt. Andy’s diverts its rafts south to Kipu Kai when the swell is big.
Winter has its own reward, though. Humpback whales pass Kauai from about December to April, per Holoholo. Kauai Sea Tours runs its raft beach landing only from May to October, which tells you how much the season matters on the rafts.
Na Pali Coast Sea Caves
On a raft, on a calm day, sometimes. The named caves include Open Ceiling Cave, also called Queen’s Bath Cave, and Waiahuakua, the “Double Door” cave, per Kauai Sea Tours. Capt. Andy’s says plainly that cave entry is never guaranteed. Na Pali Riders runs its caves-only tour seasonally, from mid-May to late September.
If the caves are the whole reason you are going, book in summer and book on a raft. Then accept that the captain decides on the day.
Na Pali Coast Dolphins
Spinner dolphins and green sea turtles are the regulars, and humpbacks join them in winter, per Capt. Andy’s. The dolphins in the photo above swam right alongside our boat. Keep a camera ready, because they come and go fast.
One rule to know. Holoholo notes that it is illegal to approach or swim with the dolphins, so no crew will put you in the water with them. You watch from the boat.

How to Avoid Seasickness on a Boat
Take something before you board, not after you feel bad. Kauai.com suggests Bonine or Dramamine the night before and again an hour before the trip. Holoholo also advises skipping alcohol on board. Once you are out, sit in the middle of the boat toward the back, where the motion is smallest, and keep your eyes on the horizon.
The ride out from Port Allen is the long part of the day, so take the pill before you leave the dock, not halfway there.
What to Bring on a Boat Tour
Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat that will not blow off, a light jacket for the ride back, a towel and a dry bag for your phone. Hawaii bans the sale of sunscreen with oxybenzone or octinoxate, so buy it on the island if you forget. Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet, since the beach-landing trips put you in the surf.
Can you drive to Na Pali Coast?
Yes, from above and from the trail, though not by car. The Kalalau Lookout and Puu O Kila Lookout in Kokee State Park look straight down into the valleys, per the state parks division. Nonresidents pay $5 per person to enter and $10 per vehicle to park at Kokee and Waimea Canyon. Haena State Park, the trailhead for the Kalalau Trail, costs the same and needs a reservation made up to 30 days ahead. Going past Hanakapiai, two miles in, requires a camping permit.
All of those parks were closed after Hurricane Lowell, per Beat of Hawaii. Check the state parks site before you drive up.
Na Pali Boat vs Helicopter
It is a different trip, and I highly recommend it. I flew over Kauai with Blue Hawaiian, and it was fantastic. From the air, you see the whole coast at once, plus the valleys and waterfalls behind the cliffs that no boat or road reaches.
Blue Hawaiian’s Kauai Eco Adventure runs about 50 minutes from Lihue, from $409 per person. Its Discover Kauai flight runs about 45 minutes from Princeville, from $499. Both cover the Na Pali cliffs and Manawaiopuna Falls, the one known as Jurassic Park Falls, per Blue Hawaiian’s site, checked September 21, 2026.
After Lowell, the Lihue base is still flying, while the Princeville base reopens once power is restored, per the same page. Right now, that makes a helicopter the more dependable way to see this coast. Still, the boat gives you things a flight cannot, like the dolphins, the snorkel stops and the sea caves. If the budget stretches, do both.

Skip the raft if anyone in your group is pregnant, has back trouble or is under six. A cave tour booked in January will probably not see caves. And skip non-refundable bookings this season until the harbors are running again.

Frequently asked questions about a Na Pali Coast boat tour
How long is the Napali Coast boat tour?
Between three and seven hours. Short raft trips run three to four hours, the catamaran snorkel sails about five, and the Niihau combination runs seven.
Is Na Pali boat tour worth it?
Yes. The coast has no road, so a boat is the easiest way to see the cliffs, caves and waterfalls from the water.
How old do kids need to be for a Na Pali boat tour?
Usually from age five or six. Capt. Andy’s rafts start at six, while Na Pali Riders and Holoholo take children from five. The large catamarans take kids from three.
When is whale watching season on the Na Pali Coast?
In winter, often. Humpbacks pass Kauai from about December to April, per Holoholo Charters.
Do Na Pali boat tours go into the sea caves?
Only the rafts, only in calm water, and never guaranteed. The big catamarans are too large to enter.
