An Acadia National Park itinerary works best as three full days. That covers Park Loop Road, Cadillac Mountain and Jordan Pond without a rushed pace. A vehicle entrance pass runs $35 for seven days, and a Cadillac Summit Road reservation adds $6 more, both per the National Park Service.
I have paddled a lot of different water over the years, in Florida and in Colorado both. So a rocky coastline that shifts from calm to rough with the tide is not unfamiliar to me. That instinct is useful here, because Acadia’s shoreline turns from a flat granite ledge to breaking surf in a matter of steps.
Quick facts
| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Vehicle entrance fee | $35, valid 7 days, covers up to 15 passengers, per the National Park Service |
| Cadillac Summit Road reservation | $6 per vehicle, required May 20 to October 25, per the National Park Service |
| Park Loop Road | 27 miles, with a one-way section near Sand Beach, per the National Park Service |
| Season | Park Loop Road is open mid-April through December 1, per the National Park Service |
Here is the arithmetic for two adults on a three-day trip. The vehicle entrance pass is $35. It covers the whole car for a full week, so one pass is all you need. A Cadillac Mountain reservation adds $6 per vehicle on top of that, if you want the summit views. Add $35 and $6 together, and the total park cost for two adults comes to $41. That total holds no matter how many of the three days you actually use the pass.
How many days in Acadia National Park?
Three days works well for a first visit. Give the first day to Park Loop Road and the coast. Give the second day to Cadillac Mountain and a real hike. Then give the third day to Jordan Pond and Bar Harbor, at a slower pace. A rushed version fits into two days. But you will drop either a hike or a full drive of the loop road to make that work.
Five days lets you add Schoodic Peninsula, a second hike and a full rest afternoon, the same way a longer White Mountains itinerary adds a second hike once the basics are covered. Most first-time visitors do not need more than three days, though. The park’s main sights all sit within a short drive of Bar Harbor.

Acadia National Park Itinerary 1 Day
Start on Park Loop Road early, before the parking lots fill. The full loop runs 27 miles, with a one-way section near Sand Beach, per the National Park Service. Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Otter Point all sit along this stretch. So plan a full morning for the drive, with stops at each one.
Have lunch near Jordan Pond, then spend the afternoon on an easy trail nearby. The loop road connects most of the park’s coastal sights. So this first day alone covers a large share of what most visitors come to see. Save the harder hikes for day two, once you already know the coastline’s general shape and where the crowds tend to gather.
Acadia National Park Itinerary 2 Days
Cadillac Mountain needs its own reservation for the summit road, separate from the park entrance fee. That reservation costs $6 per vehicle, and it runs from May 20 to October 25, per the National Park Service. Book it as early as your travel dates allow, because summer slots fill fast.
Pair the summit drive with a real hike in the afternoon, since Cadillac itself is mostly a scenic drive rather than a workout. The Precipice Trail and the Beehive are the two famous options. Both involve iron rungs and exposed edges, though, so save them for hikers who are genuinely comfortable with heights.
Acadia National Park Itinerary 3 Days
Slow the pace down on the last day. Walk the flat carriage road loop around Jordan Pond first, then spend the afternoon in Bar Harbor itself. The town has restaurants, shops and a walkable waterfront. So it works as an easy final day after two days of hiking and driving.
If the tide is low, add a walk out to Bar Island from Bar Harbor. That sandbar crossing only opens for a few hours around low tide. Check the tide chart before you plan the timing, since the window closes fast once the water starts to rise again.
Avoid driving the full Park Loop Road during the busiest midday hours in July and August, since the Sand Beach and Cadillac Mountain lots fill early. The Precipice Trail and the Beehive are also worth skipping if anyone in your group is uneasy with exposed heights, because both trails use iron rungs over real drops. Finally, do not plan a Cadillac sunrise without a reservation. The summit road requires one during the reservation season, and arriving without it means turning around at the gate.

Best Time to Visit Acadia National Park
Park Loop Road is open from mid-April through December 1 each year, per the National Park Service. Summer brings the warmest weather, along with the biggest crowds, especially in July and August. Fall brings foliage color to the hardwood ridges instead, and crowds thin out noticeably after Labor Day.
Winter closes most of Park Loop Road to regular vehicle traffic. A shorter loop near Sieur de Monts often stays open for walking and biking, though, so the park is not fully closed even in the coldest months. A first Acadia trip is easiest between late May and early October, when the full road and most trails are open at once.
How Do You Get to Acadia National Park?
Bangor International Airport is the closest major airport, about 50 miles and a little over an hour’s drive from Bar Harbor, per the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce. Portland’s airport is a larger option instead, but it sits about 175 miles away, which adds several hours of driving on top of that. Most visitors rent a car at either airport. The park’s trails and scenic drives are spread out enough that a car makes the trip far easier than relying on rides alone.
The fare-free Island Explorer shuttle also links Bar Harbor hotels and campgrounds to park destinations, running from late May through mid-October, per the shuttle’s own route information. So a car is not strictly required once you have arrived, even though most visitors still bring one for flexibility. Because parking fills early at the most popular stops, the shuttle is worth using on the busiest midsummer days.

Where to Stay Near Acadia National Park
Bar Harbor is the obvious base for a first trip, since it sits closest to Park Loop Road and has the most restaurants and lodging options. Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor sit on the quieter side of Mount Desert Island instead. Both work well if you want a shorter drive to the ferry for the Cranberry Isles.
Book lodging early for July and August. Bar Harbor’s hotels and the park’s own campgrounds both fill months ahead for peak summer weekends. A last-minute booking usually means a longer drive from outside town instead. Blackwoods and Seawall, the park’s two developed campgrounds on Mount Desert Island, also book up early through the same summer stretch. So treat a campsite reservation the same way you would treat a hotel room.
Best Acadia National Park Itinerary
I have paddled enough different coastlines to know that a rocky shore rewards patience more than speed. That is exactly the pace this itinerary asks for. Give Acadia three full days, split cleanly between Park Loop Road, Cadillac Mountain and Jordan Pond, and the $41 in combined park fees covers the whole trip for two adults. Add a fourth or fifth day only if Schoodic Peninsula or a second hike genuinely interests you.
For a first visit, three days is enough. It is not so little that you rush the coast, and it is not so much that you run out of things to do before you leave. Save the longer stays for a return trip, once you already know which trail or cove you want to see again.
