Gatlinburg Christmas runs from early November into February. Winter Magic lights switch on November 5, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas opens November 6, and the Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade comes down the Parkway on Friday, December 4, 2026.
I grew up in the Midwest and put in years of Chicago winters, so I judge a holiday town by how long I can stand outside in it. Gatlinburg does well on that test, because the lights hang along the street you are already walking and the cold stays manageable if you dress for it. Holiday trips with my nieces and nephews taught me the rest: pick one big event a day, leave gaps for hot chocolate, and pack more layers than seems reasonable.
Gatlinburg Christmas Events
The table lists the main 2026 dates, earliest first. Choose your weekend before anything else, then fit the rest around it.

| New Year’s Eve Ball Drop | Thursday, Dec 31 | Free; drone show at about 11:50 p.m. |
Early December is the busiest stretch in town. The parade is Friday and the concert follows on Saturday, so book a room for that weekend early. Tiffany and Matthew and Gunnar Nelson play the Saturday concert and lead the parade as grand marshals, according to the tourism office.
New Year’s Eve is the other big night. The ball drop is free and open to the public, with live music, a drone show at about 11:50 p.m. above the Convention Center, a fireworks finale and a 15-foot LED ball. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to secure parking and a viewing spot.
Gatlinburg Christmas Lights
Winter Magic is the lights show, and Gatlinburg’s tourism office says it has run for more than 30 years. Millions of bulbs go up downtown, and you can see them from a car or on foot. The office offers a printable map and the Visit Gatlinburg app for a self-guided tour, and the app also runs a scavenger hunt for 43 life-size snowpeople.
Lights Over Gatlinburg at SkyPark runs all season, per the tourism office, if you want the town from above. I would walk the Parkway first, because you can stop for a photo or a cup of cocoa whenever you like. Our guide to things to do in Gatlinburg covers the daytime half of the plan.
Winter nights get cold. The tourism office puts December to February highs at 49 to 53 degrees and lows at 26 to 29, with 9 or 10 days of rain or snow a month, so read our list of what to pack for the Smoky Mountains before you go. Newfound Gap Road through the national park is open year-round, weather permitting, according to the park’s seasonal road page, so check conditions before you climb.

Gatlinburg Winterfest
Winterfest is the umbrella name for the holiday season across Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville. Pigeon Forge’s Winterfest page runs the lights from November 6, 2026 through January 31, 2027, and its Christmas Village of local makers at 186 Old Mill Avenue opens November 13 to 15 and November 20 to 28.
Gatlinburg’s share is Winter Magic, the Chili Cookoff, the Festival of Trees, the parade and the New Year’s Eve ball drop. Pigeon Forge adds a Driving Tour of Lights and the Wonders of Light Walking Trail, and more than 40 artisans sell at the Christmas Village each year. We cover Winterfest and the winter months week by week in the best-time guide.

Gatlinburg Christmas Parade
The 51st Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2026. It begins at Baskins Creek Bypass, passes traffic light 3, and finishes at light 10 near the park entrance. Watching is free, and the parade runs about an hour.
Roads close early. Outbound East Parkway drops to one lane at 4:30 p.m., the inbound lane closes around 6:50, and all traffic on the route stops about 7:00. Sidewalks fill quickly, so bring a blanket and a lawn chair and arrive early.
Grandstand seats cost $50 per person, per the parade page. They open at 5:30 p.m. at traffic light 3 or the Convention Center and include a Santa hat. One child under 5 can sit on a lap, but strollers are not allowed in the grandstand. If you miss it, the parade is broadcast on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Dollywood Christmas
Smoky Mountain Christmas runs from November 6, 2026 through January 3, 2027, per Dollywood, with more than 6 million lights across the park. The Country Fair area becomes Peppermint Valley, and the holiday shows and visits with Santa return. Dollywood is in Pigeon Forge, so treat it as its own trip from Gatlinburg.
The park is not open every day in that window, so check its calendar before you pick a date. One-day adult tickets for 2026 start at $94.99 for a Pick-A-Day date and $99.99 for Good-Any-Day, before tax, per Dollywood’s ticket page. Parking is sold as a separate add-on, and our Dollywood tickets guide explains the ticket types.

Ober Gatlinburg Christmas
Ober Gatlinburg sits on the mountain above town and has an indoor ice rink that is open year round. Ober’s ticket page lists a Fun Pass at $39 when bought at least a day ahead, $49 for same-day online and $54 on site, covering skating, the Gatlinburg Tram and the Sky Village Lift. Snow tubing starts at $29, with an anticipated opening on Friday, November 20 that Ober says is not confirmed.
Tubers 6 and older who are at least 42 inches tall may ride alone, and younger or shorter children ride with an adult. Over at Anakeesta, Breakfast With Santa runs December 5, 12, 19 and 20 from 7:45 to 9:30 a.m. Adult tickets are $104.99, seniors $97.99 and children 4 to 11 $87.99, and the ticket includes early access to the park. Tickets are sold online only and sell out, so buy early.

Gatlinburg Christmas Trolley
The Gatlinburg Trolley is free. The tourism office says there are no fares or fees, and winter hours run 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. from November 1 to April 30, varying by route and special events. All routes stop at the Mass Transit Center at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies.
The easiest plan is to park at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center at 1011 Banner Road and ride in. Parking there is free, and the trolley takes a few minutes. Overnight and long-term parking is not allowed in any city lot.
On parade night I would park by mid-afternoon and ride the trolley, since the main road is closed to cars by 7:00. If your hotel is downtown, leave the car there and walk.
