The best dog friendly beaches in Southern California let dogs off-leash for free. Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego does it around the clock, per the City of San Diego. Huntington Dog Beach is the runner-up for most dogs, since it’s open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily on a long stretch of sand. The decisive fact for planning any visit: leash rules change by beach and by season. So what’s legal at one spot can get you a ticket two miles down the coast.
I moved to Southern California from a Chicago apartment, dog in tow. I quickly learned which beaches actually welcome him off-leash and which just tolerate a leash walk near the sand. That gap between “dog friendly” and “off-leash” trips up a lot of first-time visitors. So I always check the exact hours before I load the car.

Dog Friendly Beaches With Free Parking
Most of these beaches are free to enter. Parking is where the cost, or the savings, shows up. At Huntington Dog Beach, meters run $2 per hour, per the beach’s own FAQ page. So a three-hour visit costs $6 in parking alone. Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego has a free public lot instead, per the City of San Diego’s own beach page. So a three-hour visit there costs nothing. Del Mar North Beach also offers free all-day parking, along Camino Del Mar between 22nd and 29th streets, per the City of Del Mar’s dog beach rules. Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach relies on street parking. The city’s own park page doesn’t post a rate, so budget for a search instead of counting on a free spot.

Huntington Dog Beach Parking
Huntington Dog Beach stretches between Seapoint and Goldenwest streets. It stays open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the year, per the beach’s own FAQ. Dogs must stay leashed until they’re actually on the sand. After that, they can run free. Waste pickup is strictly enforced, and dogs need current tags and vaccinations to visit. Two metered lots handle parking, and the meters only take credit or debit cards.
Go early on weekends. The lots fill fast once the morning dog-walking crowd arrives, and street parking nearby is also limited. Because the beach runs so long, however, a crowded lot doesn’t always mean a crowded stretch of sand further down.

Ocean Beach Dog Beach San Diego
This is the one beach on this list with zero time restrictions. Dogs run off-leash 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, per the City of San Diego. The off-leash zone sits north of Lifeguard Tower 5, at the end of the San Diego River Bikeway. Parking is free in the lot at 5156 W Point Loma Boulevard. Overnight parking there isn’t allowed, though.
Because there’s no closing time, this is the pick for early risers. It’s also a good option for a dog that does better with fewer other dogs around.
Del Mar Dog Beach Leash Rules
Del Mar’s rules shift with the calendar, so check the date before you go. From the day after Labor Day through June 15, dogs run off-leash between 29th Street and the Solana Beach border, per the City of Del Mar. During summer, June 16 through Labor Day, that same stretch only allows off-leash dogs from dawn to 8 a.m. After that, leashes are required. A six-foot maximum leash length applies whenever a leash is required. Off-leash dogs, meanwhile, must stay under voice control.
Free all-day parking runs along Camino Del Mar between 22nd and 29th streets. Arrive before noon in summer, because spots fill up by then most days, per the city’s own parking guide.

Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach
Rosie’s Dog Beach covers 4.1 acres of sand along Ocean Boulevard, between Granada Avenue and Roycroft Avenue. It’s open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, per the City of Long Beach’s own park page. Dogs can run off-leash the entire time the beach is open, which is simpler to plan around than Del Mar’s seasonal split. The beach has won a National Gold Medal Award, per the city’s own listing. The calmer water near the breakwater, meanwhile, makes it a common pick for older or nervous dogs.
Street parking is your only option here. So plan extra time to find a spot, especially on weekend mornings.
Dog Friendly Beaches in Summer
Weekday mornings beat weekend afternoons at every beach on this list. Dogs and people both crowd the sand once the weekend sun is out, and parking lots fill first. For Del Mar specifically, plan around the season, not just the day. Off-leash hours shrink dramatically there in summer. So a June visit needs an early dawn arrival to get any real off-leash time at all.
Winter and spring generally bring calmer surf and thinner crowds across the coast. As a result, leash-free running is also easier to manage with a nervous or reactive dog. Still, always check the current season’s hours before a Del Mar trip, because the same calendar date can fall on either side of the summer cutoff depending on the year.
Southern California Beaches That Allow Dogs
Skip assuming “dog friendly” means off-leash. Several beaches allow leashed dogs on sand that isn’t part of a true off-leash zone. The rules also don’t always post clearly at the entrance. Also skip Del Mar’s off-leash hours in summer if you can’t arrive by dawn; after 8 a.m., a leash is required there from June through Labor Day. Finally, don’t skip checking tag and vaccination requirements before you leave home. Huntington Dog Beach and others can turn a dog away without current proof.
Don’t bring a female dog in heat, either. Every official rule page on this list bans it outright. Also don’t rely on a beach’s reputation alone; instead, confirm the current hours on the city’s own page before you drive out.

Best Dog Friendly Beaches Southern California
I’ve made the over-packed dog-beach-bag mistake enough times to know what actually matters. Full-time off-leash access beats a prettier stretch of sand every time. For a first visit, Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego is the easiest call. The round-the-clock rule means you can’t accidentally show up during a leashed window. Huntington Dog Beach is the better pick, instead, if you want a longer beach and don’t mind paying for parking. Save Del Mar for a trip you can plan carefully around its seasonal hours.
