Corona del Mar State Beach costs $15 per car to park in the lot off Ocean Boulevard, opens 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, and lets leashed dogs on the sand from 6 to 10 a.m. and 4:30 to 10 p.m., per Outdoor Project. It is the calm-water beach in Newport Beach, because a long rock jetty keeps the surf down. There are also fire rings for bonfires. A half-mile walk south takes you to Little Corona, where the tide pools are and the street parking is free. Go at low tide for the pools and before 10 a.m. for the dog.
I have lived in Southern California for years now, after growing up in the Midwest. The thing that still surprises me is how a beach can have a schedule. Here the tide chart matters more than the weather. I walk my dogs here in the early window. By the time the leash rule kicks in at ten, the tide pools at Little Corona are usually covered anyway. The morning therefore does double duty.

Corona del Mar State Beach Cost
Fifteen dollars if you use the lot, nothing if you park on the streets above and walk down. Outdoor Project lists the standard-vehicle fee at $15, and AFAR’s tip is to park in the residential blocks above the beach to skip it. Little Corona has only free street parking at Poppy Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, per Visit Newport Beach, so the tide-pool half of the day is free by default.

Corona del Mar Tide Pools Low Tide
At Little Corona, the small cove a five-minute walk south of the main beach, and only at low tide. Take the paved path down from the corner of Poppy Avenue and Ocean Boulevard. The rocks sit at the north end of the cove. Anemones, hermit crabs, sea urchins, small fish and the occasional sea star live there, per Orange County Outdoors. California Through My Lens found the best pools about a quarter mile down the beach, where fewer people walk. Check a tide chart the night before: in that writer’s example, a 6 a.m. low tide meant the pools were covering over by 9:30 or 10.

Two practical notes. The rocks are jagged and hurt bare feet, so wear shoes. And the path down is steep and slippery when wet, per Orange County Outdoors; it is technically accessible, but getting back up is the hard part. Whether there is a restroom on the path is disputed: Enjoy Orange County says there is one halfway down, Visit Newport Beach lists none, so plan for none.

How big are the waves at Corona del Mar beach?
Yes, on the main beach. The rock jetty on the harbor side keeps the water fairly flat, per AFAR, and there is a small cove against the cliffs on the west side with almost no waves at all, per Outdoor Project. Little Corona is protected by reefs on both sides and is one of the easier places in Orange County to snorkel or beach-dive, per Visit Newport Beach. Buoys about 150 yards out mark where boats and jet skis have to stay away.

Corona del Mar Beach Dog Rules
Only in the two windows: 6 to 10 a.m. and 4:30 to 10 p.m., on a leash, per Outdoor Project. Between those hours the sand is closed to dogs. The early window is the better one in summer, when the sand is cool and the lot is empty.

Corona del Mar Fire Pit Rules
Bonfires are allowed. Outdoor Project lists them among the beach’s allowed activities in its fire rings, which is one reason the beach stays busy after dinner and stays open until 10 p.m. Rings are first come, first served, so on a weekend someone in your group should claim one in the afternoon.
Things to Do Near Corona del Mar Beach
Orange County Outdoors puts it well: within half a mile there is sand with waves, sand without waves, tide pools, restrooms, fire pits, a natural arch and two overlooks. Lookout Point, on the bluff above the main beach, is the sunset spot. Arch Rock sits just south of Little Corona and is visible from its sand. Pirate’s Cove is the tiny pocket between the two beaches. Inspiration Point, farther along Ocean Boulevard, is the panorama.

Corona del Mar Beach Rules
Skip arriving mid-morning on a hot summer weekend. Orange County Outdoors calls it extremely crowded then, and nearly empty on weekdays and cooler weekends. Avoid the tide pools at high tide, because there is nothing to see. Leave the flip-flops at home if you plan to walk the rocks.
Corona del Mar is one of several Orange County and San Diego beaches we cover. Laguna Beach is the next town south. For a dog along, check the dog-friendly beaches list first, because Corona del Mar limits dog hours. The Catalina ferry and a San Diego weekend round out a longer trip.
