The simplest Belize itinerary for 7 days has two halves. Spend three nights inland at San Ignacio for the Maya sites and the cave. Spend three nights on the water at Ambergris Caye or Placencia.
You land at Philip S. W. Goldson International outside Belize City and head west. A short plane or boat hop takes you to the reef at the end.
We have travelled all over the world, and a split week like this follows one rule everywhere. I would put the sweaty, early-start days first and the beach days last. Jungle days want a fresh body and a cool morning.
Every fee, fare and rule below comes from an official or operator page as of early October 2026. Confirm each one before you book.
Belize Itinerary 7 Days
Here is the week at a glance. The fees come from the Institute of Archaeology listings at nichbelize.org (shown in USD). The rest come from Tropic Air’s fare page and two San Pedro tour pages.
| Day | Base | Plan | Transport | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | San Ignacio | Land, collect bags, drive west in daylight | Rental car or transfer | None listed |
| 2 | San Ignacio | Xunantunich in the morning, town market later | Short drive, hand-cranked ferry | $10.00 – $25.00 |
| 3 | San Ignacio | The cave tour or Caracol, not both | Guided tour van | $30.00 – $60.00 cave; $15.00 – $25.00 Caracol |
| 4 | Ambergris Caye or Placencia | Move to the coast, easy afternoon | Plane or water taxi | From USD $67 round trip, Belize City to San Pedro |
| 5 | Coast | Hol Chan snorkel | Tour boat | $50.00 USD plus $15USD marine fee |
| 6 | Coast | Blue Hole day or a beach day | Boat or small plane | US $215 plus US $40 park fees |
| 7 | Belize City | Fly home | Airport | $55.50 USD departure fee if not in your airfare |
San Ignacio is the largest town in Cayo. It sits 67 miles from Belize City. The Hawkesworth Bridge links it to its twin town, Santa Elena.
Day 2 is the easy ruins day. Xunantunich sits on a hill at San José Succotz. You cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry. Its El Castillo pyramid stands 130 feet above the plaza, per Travel Belize.
Day 3 is a real choice. Pick the cave or Caracol for the big day. Add the other on an extra night.
Belize Itinerary 5 Days
Drop the Blue Hole day and the second big inland day. Two nights in San Ignacio and two on the coast still give you one set of ruins. You also get one proper reef morning.
Belize Itinerary 8 Days
Add a night in San Ignacio so Caracol and the cave do not compete. Caana at Caracol is 143 feet high, the tallest structure built in Belize, per Travel Belize. A day that long is easier when no early boat follows it.
Belize Itinerary 10 Days
Ten days buys a third base. Do San Ignacio, then Ambergris Caye, then Placencia. Travel Belize lists snorkel trips there to Silk Caye, Laughing Bird Caye and Moho Caye.
Belize Itinerary 2 Weeks
Two weeks is for adding nights, not places. Stay longer at each base. Let the weather choose your reef day.

Ambergris Caye or Placencia
Pick Ambergris Caye if you want the reef at the door and the most day trips. It is Belize’s largest island, and San Pedro is its town. Hol Chan sits about four miles south. The Blue Hole day trips in the operators’ listings leave from San Pedro too.
Pick Placencia for a quieter week on a 16-mile peninsula. It has one of the narrowest streets in the country. Travel Belize’s reef page mentions whale sharks off its coast. I would not try both coasts in one week, because the transfers eat the time you came for.

Getting to either coast is a short flight or, for San Pedro, a boat. Maya Island Air flies to San Pedro, Placencia and Caye Caulker. It says reservations are best made 24 hours ahead and displays prices in USD.
The San Pedro Belize Express water taxi runs between Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro. Its schedule is a downloadable image, so check the current one before you plan a connection.
Tropic Air’s baggage page limits checked bags to 18 by 30 by 13.5 inches. Oversize bags may travel later, ship as cargo or be refused. A small soft bag solves that, and our carry-on-only packing list covers how to build one.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve
Hol Chan is the reef day I would book first. The reserve lies about four miles south of San Pedro. It covers 13,632 acres in four zones: coral reef, sea grass beds, mangroves and Shark Ray Alley, per Travel Belize. It was legislated in July 1987.
One San Pedro operator lists the Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley snorkel at $50.00 USD per person. The trip runs about 90 minutes, with a 15-minute boat ride. Departures are 9:00 am or 2:00 pm, and it needs four guests to confirm.
The operator lists a $15USD marine entrance fee, paid in cash and not included, so confirm the reserve’s current fee when you book. The 12.5% government sales tax and gratuity are extra too. I would take the 9:00 am boat and keep the afternoon free. Travel Belize asks snorkelers to wear reef-safe sunscreen and keep off the coral.
Great Blue Hole Belize
The Great Blue Hole is roughly 1,000 feet across and over 400 feet deep. It sits near the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, per Travel Belize. The board lists three ways to see it: a day dive-boat trip, a live-aboard dive vessel or an air tour.

The air tour is the short version. Travel Belize puts the round trip at about 1.5 hours, with the hole 43 miles from the mainland. Ask the air-tour operator what its price includes.
The boat day is long. One San Pedro operator lists its snorkel trip at US $215 for roughly 11 hours, from 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The boat ride is 2 to 2½ hours each way.
Park fees are separate, at US $30 for the Blue Hole and US $10 for Half Moon Caye. They are paid in cash. The 12.5% sales tax and gratuity are extra, and the snorkel day needs 10 guests to confirm.
The same operator lists the dive trip at $285.00 USD. It asks for a logged dive within six months, at a minimum depth of 80 ft. Short on time, I would fly it and spend the saved day at Hol Chan.
Actun Tunichil Muknal
The cave tour is the most demanding day of the week. Per Travel Belize, it is a 45-minute drive from San Ignacio. Then comes a 45-minute hike through Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and a swim into the cave. The guided walk ends at ceramics and skeletons, including the calcified remains the board calls the Crystal Maiden.
The board’s dos and don’ts page puts the tour at about four hours. It says cameras are not allowed under any circumstances, after a falling camera damaged an artifact. Only a handful of certified guides run the tour.
The Institute of Archaeology’s 2025 cave policy backs that up. Cave guides need specialised training from the Institute or from authorised archaeologists.
Wear close-toed shoes with real grip and bring very little. Pick this day if you are comfortable swimming in the dark and walking wet for hours. If a cold dunk sounds miserable, spend the day at Caracol instead. NICH lists the cave at $30.00 – $60.00 in USD, so ask your operator what that range covers.
Best Time to Visit Belize
Belize has two seasons, dry and wet. Travel Belize puts high season at December through March or April, with virtually no rain. It puts the rainy season at June to November.
A Caribbean regional climate profile credits the National Meteorological Service of Belize. It puts the wet season at May to December, with monthly rainfall from 100 mm to over 600 mm. The edges blur, so plan around the rule, not the date.
The tourism board’s budget page says tours and hotels can go as low as 50% off in the low season. Belize shares the Caribbean’s wet-and-dry rhythm. Our guide to the best time to visit the Caribbean covers the island side of that calendar.
Hurricane season matters for a reef week. The National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30. Its peak is September 10, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October. The State Department adds that storms commonly make landfall in Belize, so November is still inside the season.
What to Pack for Belize
I would pack reef-safe sunscreen and a rain shell, and very little else. Travel Belize calls sunscreen and mosquito repellent essential. Leave the denim and the third pair of sandals at home. Nothing on this route rewards them.
For the cave day, the board lists waterproof sunscreen, bug repellent, a quick-drying long-sleeved shirt and athletic shorts. Bring shoes with grip and nothing you would mind getting wet. Belize sits on the Caribbean coast, so our Caribbean packing list covers the reef-day extras.
How Much Does a Trip to Belize Cost?
The fees in this itinerary add up to a clear floor. Tropic Air’s fare page showed round trips from Belize City to San Pedro starting at USD $67. The lowest fares ranged from USD $67 to $210 for October 2026 dates. Travel Belize’s travel page lists a $55.50 USD international airport departure fee, so check whether your airfare already includes it.
Add a $50.00 USD Hol Chan snorkel plus the $15USD marine fee. Or add US $215 for the Blue Hole snorkel day plus US $40 in park fees. Operators add 12.5% government sales tax and gratuity. Those tours need minimum groups of 4 and 10 guests, so a shared booking beats a private one.
Lodging is the swing line. Travel Belize’s budget page says tours and hotels can go as low as 50% off in the low season. It also says joining group tours saves money.
Is Belize safe to travel to?
Mostly, with the usual care. The State Department’s Belize advisory, issued March 12, 2026, was Level 2, exercise increased caution. Check the current level before you go. The page says violent crime can happen even by day and in tourist areas.
The page marks the south side of Belize City as Level 3, reconsider travel. That area runs from the Haulover Creek Canal south to Fabers Road. The page also advises against driving between cities after dark, so book flights that land in the afternoon.
It asks divers and snorkelers to use reputable, certified operators. It also warns that some beaches and rivers have strong currents and no lifeguards.
Do you need a passport for Belize?
Yes. The State Department’s Belize entry page, last updated June 18, 2026, says you need a valid passport book with at least one blank page. It says no visa is needed for stays of 30 days or less. It also lists proof of an onward or return ticket and sufficient funds.
Travel Belize’s travel page asks for a passport valid for at least 30 days. Belize’s immigration site tells travelers to fill in the E-embarkation form online at ideclare.gov.bz before they fly. For shorter lines at the US end, start with our TSA PreCheck, Global Entry and CLEAR comparison.
Does Belize use US dollars?
Both, in practice. The Central Bank of Belize fixes the rate at BZ$2.00 to US$1.00. Travel Belize says almost every place of business accepts USD. Check whether a posted price is in BZ or US dollars before you pay.
Prices are approximate, current as of publication, and change frequently — confirm the latest price with the retailer before buying.
