Cancun things to do start with the Hotel Zone beaches, the MUSA underwater sculpture museum and the Isla Mujeres ferry. Add one day trip to Xcaret, Xel-Há or the ruins. Plan the water for your first two mornings. Keep the long drive for a settled-weather day.
I have spent a lot of time on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and around the Yucatán, snorkeling, boating and island hopping. The lesson never changes: put every water activity in the morning. Wind builds through the afternoon, and port captains close harbors when it gets rough. A boat day that slips to 2 p.m. is the first thing to go wrong.
Cancun Hotel Zone
The Hotel Zone is a long, narrow strip of resorts and beaches between the Caribbean and Nichupté Lagoon. Boulevard Kukulcán runs down the middle. Everyone gives directions by kilometer marker. Playa Tortugas is at km 6.5 and Playa Caracol at km 9.5. Both have ferry docks, so a morning on the water can start near your hotel. If you are still deciding where to base yourself, our Cancun vs Playa del Carmen comparison covers the trade-offs.
The airport sits about 20 km from the Hotel Zone. ADO sells an airport bus to the zone from about 170 pesos (roughly $10). Per ADO’s ticket page, the ride takes about 45 minutes. The table lists what the main stops cost.
| Stop | Cost | Hours or departures | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playa Tortugas and Playa Delfines | No ticket | Daylight | Public beaches |
| El Rey ruins | 75 pesos | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily | Hotel Zone, about an hour is enough |
| MUSA snorkel, Punta Nizuc gallery | $58, under-11s $34, plus a dock and marine park fee | 10:00, 12:00 and 2:00 from Cancun | Ages 4 to 65 |
| Isla Mujeres ferry from Puerto Juárez | 290 pesos adult one way, 580 round trip | Check the Ultramar schedule | Child fare 220 pesos one way |
| Xcaret | Varies by date; under-5s free | 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., daily | South of Playa del Carmen |
| Xel-Há all-inclusive | Varies by date; ages 5 to 11 get 25% off | 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Tuesdays | About 110 km, 1.5 to 2 hours by car |

Cancun beaches
The beaches are the reason most people book Cancun, and the good news is that Mexican beaches are public. Playa Tortugas is the easy one, close to the ferry dock and the hotel strip. Playa Delfines is the long open stretch at the southern end of the zone. Expect wide white sand and thatched palapas along the back.
Check the flag before you swim. On a red-flag day, stay on the sand. Seaweed is the other thing to watch. Sargassum has fouled Cancun beaches in recent summers, so look at a recent photo of your beach first. Go early. Shade under the palapas and parking go first, and the start time matters more than the beach.

If you only want a short break from the beach, El Rey is inside the Hotel Zone. It reopened in July 2025 with a 75-peso ticket, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, according to Quintana Roo news outlet Ruptura 360. The site is small, so an hour is plenty.
Cancun underwater museum
MUSA, the Museo Subacuático de Arte, is a collection of more than 500 life-size sculptures. They sit on the seafloor around Cancun and Isla Mujeres to give coral something to grow on. Many are by Jason deCaires Taylor. You see them by snorkeling, scuba diving or glass-bottom boat.
MUSA’s own price list has the Punta Nizuc snorkel at $58, or $34 for children under 11. The glass-bottom boat is also $58, and both together are $78. Certified divers pay $115 from Cancun. Divers without a certificate pay $145 for one guided dive or $179 for two.
The snorkel lasts at least two and a half hours and leaves Cancun at 10:00, 12:00 and 2:00. A life vest is mandatory, and pregnant women cannot take it. MUSA’s pages list the dock and marine park fee as both $15 and $22, paid at check-in.
The museum has more than one site. Snorkel and glass-bottom trips go to Punta Nizuc, while MUSA recommends its Manchones gallery for scuba only. Book a morning departure, when the water is usually calmer for snorkeling.
If anyone in your group is a nervous swimmer, take the glass-bottom boat. You still see the figures, and nobody has to get in the water.

Cancun day trips
The ferry is the simplest day trip. Ultramar’s boats to Isla Mujeres leave from Puerto Juárez, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. All land at the terminal on Avenida Rueda Medina. An adult ticket from Puerto Juárez is 290 pesos one way and 580 round trip, per Ultramar’s fare page. The company asks you to be at the terminal 30 minutes before departure.
Xcaret is a big, scheduled day. The eco-park sits just south of Playa del Carmen and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Its FAQ lists underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium. The evening show is Xcaret México Espectacular, and Xcaret Plus adds a buffet lunch.
Xel-Há is the snorkeling day. The park is about 110 km from Cancun, usually 1.5 to 2 hours by car, and open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day but Tuesday. Its all-inclusive admission covers the restaurants and a domestic open bar. Inlet snorkeling, the river and a 131-foot lighthouse with a slide are the big draws. Both parks let under-5s in free, and Xel-Há takes 25% off for ages 5 to 11. Prices change by date, so read them on the parks’ own booking pages.
For ruins, the full-day option is our guide to visiting Chichen Itza from Cancun. For a swim in a limestone sinkhole, see the best cenotes near Tulum. Both are long days, so pick one.

Cancun in December
December is dry-season Cancun. The hurricane season ends November 30, per the National Hurricane Center. Airport weather-station normals for 1991 to 2020 give a December high of 84°F (28.9°C) and a low of 68°F (20°C). Expect sea water around 81°F (27°C). Rain averages 3.1 inches for the month.
That means swimming weather by day and a light layer at night. Holiday weeks are busy, so book the MUSA tour, the ferry and any park ticket early. Our Mexico packing list covers the rest of the bag.
Is Cancun safe right now?
The US State Department’s Mexico advisory, issued May 29, 2026, is Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” and lists Quintana Roo, where Cancun sits, under “terrorism and crime.” It also tells travelers to watch their surroundings after dark and to stay in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones. Read the full text on travel.state.gov before you book.
In practice that means the Hotel Zone, the resort strip and the daytime tours above. The airport’s own site advises pre-arranging your ride to the hotel. Do it, so you are not choosing a driver in the arrivals crowd. Use the same common sense as in any busy resort town. Keep your phone and passport out of sight on the beach, and save long drives for daylight.
