An Oregon Dunes ATV rental starts at about $60 an hour for a quad and runs $200 to $400 an hour for a side-by-side, per rental company price lists checked in September 2026. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area runs about 40 miles along the coast between Florence and Coos Bay. Only part of it is open to machines, so where you rent decides where you ride. Parking at the Forest Service staging areas costs $5 a day, card only.
I have been out on these dunes, and every photo on this page is mine. My wife and I each drove, and I would do it again. Driving on an Oregon beach had been on my list ever since I first saw The Goonies. The quad on the beach is flying the tall whip flag every machine out there has to carry. The tracks in the big photo run straight up the face of a dune. And some of the sand trails start in the pines, well back from the open sand.

Torex adds a 5% fee on top. Ridin’ Dirty in Winchester Bay does not post prices online, and its side-by-side drivers must be 25 or older. For a family with young kids, the cheapest way onto the sand is not a rental at all. It is a guided sandrail ride, where a driver takes you out for half an hour.

Where to Ride Dunes in Oregon
In three riding areas, per the Forest Service riding-area map. The rest of the recreation area is closed to machines. A 1994 management plan limits riding to about 31% of the dunes.
- North, Florence to Siltcoos. Staging at South Jetty, a mile south of Florence off Highway 101, and at Siltcoos, 7 miles south. Riding runs 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. South Jetty fills on summer weekends.
- Middle, Umpqua Dunes at Winchester Bay. Normally open around the clock, but under a 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew from August 11 to October 14, 2026. Dan Van Slyke staging is free to park; the Forest Service lots at the end of Salmon Harbor Drive charge.
- South, Horsfall to Spinreel near North Bend. Riding runs 6 a.m. to midnight.
Rent in the area you want to ride. The riding areas sit up to 40 miles apart along Highway 101, so pick the town first and the rental company second.
Are the Oregon Dunes closed?
Banshee Hill and the southwest edge of the Umpqua Dunes, since August 11, 2026. A court order closed them to off-highway vehicles until further action, per the Siuslaw National Forest. Banshee Hill is the tallest dune in the area at about 500 feet, so this closure takes out the headline climb. Ask your rental company for the current map before you leave the lot.
Seasonal closures matter too. Snowy plover nesting restricts riding on some beaches from March 15 to September 15. The beach between South Jetty and Siltcoos is open to machines only from October 1 to April 30, per the Forest Service.
Oregon Dunes ATV Rules
Every machine flies a red or orange flag, 8 by 12 inches, mounted 9 feet above the ground, per the Forest Service. Lights are required before sunrise, after sunset, and whenever you can see less than 100 feet. The sound limit on the dunes is 93 decibels. Rentals come with all of this sorted, which is a large part of what you are paying for.
Riders under 18 must wear a helmet with a chin strap. Under 16, a rider needs an adult supervisor aged 18 or over who holds a safety card. On the open beach the speed limit is 25 mph, dropping to 10 mph on closed sections and in the Winchester Bay OHV lanes.

Oregon Dunes ATV Permit
Not one you buy yourself. Renters sign a checklist and get a temporary 30-day safety card, per Oregon Parks and Recreation. That card covers quads at any age. Side-by-side drivers also need a driver’s license or learner’s permit. Rental companies include the ATV operating permit decal on their machines.
Bringing your own machine is different. You need Oregon’s ATV permit, $10 for two years, unless your home state has a reciprocal deal. California and Nevada riders are covered; riders from Washington, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado must buy one.
Oregon Dunes Parking Pass
$5 per vehicle per day at South Jetty, Siltcoos and Horsfall, paid by card only, with no cash. A Northwest Forest Pass, the Oregon Pacific Coast Passport or an interagency pass covers it instead. At Winchester Bay, Dan Van Slyke staging is free. If you are renting, ask whether the shop has its own access to the sand before you pay at a staging area. If you are riding more than a couple of days a year on Forest Service land, the annual Northwest Forest Pass pays for itself quickly.
Best Time to Visit Oregon Dunes
Morning. Torex advises renting before noon, because the wind builds between noon and 2 p.m. in summer and the blowing sand gets rough. Fog is common on this coast, so the first hour may be gray. After mid-September the beach closures for plover nesting lift, and from October the South Jetty beach opens to riding.

What to Wear ATV Riding
Long pants, long sleeves and closed shoes or boots, per Torex. The state adds gloves, goggles and over-the-ankle boots, and notes that most ATV incidents happen on the dunes. Tinted goggles help with glare off the sand. Rentals supply helmets and goggles.
Oregon Dunes Side by Side Rentals
Pick the quad if you are one or two confident riders on a budget. At $60 an hour it is the cheapest way to drive yourself. Choose a side-by-side for a group or for anyone nervous on two handlebars, since Torex rents models seating two, four or five. Or pick the sandrail tour for young children, or when nobody wants to drive. Sandland takes riders from age three.
Crater Lake to Oregon Dunes
Beautiful. We drove over from Crater Lake, and most of the way is thick forest with rivers running beside the road. So if you are pairing the two on one trip, drive it in daylight and take your time.
One thing to know before you fill up. When I was last in Oregon, you could not pump your own gas, and an attendant did it for you. Oregon changed that law in 2023. Even so, in the counties around the dunes, including Lane, Douglas and Coos, stations may offer self-serve at no more than half their pumps, and the rest must still have an attendant, per the Oregon State Fire Marshal. In practice, pull up and wait a moment before you reach for the nozzle, or look for the self-serve sign.
Skip planning your day around Banshee Hill while the court closure stands. Afternoon rentals in summer are a mistake too, because of the wind. Do not arrive at South Jetty with cash only, since the fee is card only. And do not book a side-by-side for a driver under 30 at Torex, because they will not hand over the keys.
