Hilton Head is a low-rise, planned beach island on the South Carolina coast. It has gated communities, tree-lined bike paths and no neon strip. The short answer to what to do: pick one public beach park, ride the Town’s pathways and climb a lighthouse. Keep a museum or a wildlife refuge for the hot or wet half of a day.
I would pick one beach for the morning and keep the afternoon free. We have done beach weeks with nieces and nephews along, and the rhythm that works is sand and swimming early, then shade, snacks and something flat after lunch. Hilton Head suits that plan, because the bike paths and the beach parks do most of the planning for you.
Every fee, hour and rule below comes from the Town, the refuge or the operator’s own page, read in early October 2026. Fees and hours move with the seasons, so confirm them before you go.

Hilton Head Beaches
All of the beach is public from the ocean to the high-water mark. Access from the street is often private, the Town says. That is why the seven beach parks matter: they are the doors in.

The island’s visitor site puts the sand at about 12 miles. Tide matters here. At high tide the dry sand narrows fast, so keep your towels near the dune line only if you will be gone before the water arrives.
Coligny is the busy one, with the most going on around it and the only free lot. Driessen and Islanders lean toward families because of the playgrounds and pavilions. Fish Haul faces a salt marsh and a creek. It suits a quiet walk more than a swim.

Hilton Head Beach Parking
The Town’s beach parking page lists $3 an hour on weekdays and $5 on weekends for visitors. It enforces that from 7 am to 5 pm and takes payment by phone app only. Coligny is free year-round, and the beach parks open daily from 6 am to 10 pm.
Those rates belong to a peak season of March 1 through September 7. In early October the page listed no rates for the rest of the year, so read the sign or the app at the lot.
Cross Islanders Beach Park off the list. The Town’s homepage lists it as closed from September 8, 2026 through May 31, 2027 for improvements. Lifeguards cover the designated swim areas from April 1 through September 30, so after that you swim on your own.
Hilton Head Beach Rules
The rules are the usual ones, and they are enforced. No alcohol, no glass, no fires or fireworks. Holes can be no deeper than 12 inches and must be filled before you leave. Fines run up to $1,092.50 per offense on the Town’s regulations page.
Dogs follow a calendar. From October through March they are allowed all day, on a leash or under voice control. From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day they are barred from the beach between 10 am and 5 pm. If you travel with a dog, our road trip with a dog checklist covers the car side of it.
Hilton Head Bike Paths
The Town counts more than 72 miles of public pathways and nature trails. Private communities add more than 50 miles. The Town also lists about 12 miles of beach you can ride at low tide.
That is why a car is optional for much of a stay and a bike is not. Rental shops are everywhere on the island, so book a bike for a day rather than a week.
Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are allowed on the public pathways. Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited. After dark you need a headlight and a rear reflector. Most pathways are not lit, so be back before dusk.
Pack for it like a beach day on wheels: water, sunscreen and a bag that closes. Our beach vacation packing list covers the rest. I would carry more water than feels sensible.

Harbour Town Lighthouse
Harbour Town is the island’s postcard: a marina ringed with shops and a red-and-white lighthouse over the water. Sea Pines calls it the island’s most famous and most visited marina. It lists more than 20 boutiques, galleries and gift shops. Come for the harbor view and a slow walk.
Getting in takes a plan. A Sea Pines gate pass is required to enter the community, per the resort’s FAQ page. Build that into the day and confirm the price at the entrance.
The lighthouse’s own site says the climb is $8 per person. Children 5 and under are free. It is open daily from 10 am until sundown.

Pinckney Island
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is the non-beach half-day that costs the least. It is open sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. Cars stop at the parking area, so you walk or bike from there. The entrance is on US 278 just off the island.
Plan for no help. The refuge page says there is no staff and there are no restrooms, drinking water or shelter. Dogs are not allowed on refuge lands.
The first pond is about a 2-mile round trip from the lot. Bikes, including e-bikes, are welcome. The refuge is a nesting site for wading birds such as ibis, egrets and herons.
Hilton Head Sea Turtle Season
Sea turtle season changes what a beach evening looks like. The Town says females usually begin to nest in the first or second week of May. Nesting usually wraps up by the end of August. Lighting rules run longer, from May 1 through October 31.
That rule is the law for anyone with a view of the sand. Outside lights go off at 10 pm. Blinds or drapes close at 10 pm if interior light reaches the beach.
On the beach itself, never leave umbrellas, chairs or other gear overnight. Fill every hole and flatten every sandcastle before you go. Hatchlings can get stuck in them.
Best Time to Visit Hilton Head
Spring and fall are the easy seasons. They are warm enough for the beach, cooler for bikes and walks, and quieter than summer. Summer is the peak for crowds, heat and parking fees.
The quiet months trade swimming for empty paths. They also let dogs onto the beach all day.
Storm season is part of the fall decision. The National Hurricane Center puts the Atlantic season at June 1 to November 30. It says the peak is September 10, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October. For a fall trip, watch the forecast and book cancellable lodging rather than skipping the month.
Hilton Head Things to Do on a Rainy Day
The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn is the best first call, and it is free. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Sunday hours are 11 am to 4:30 pm.

Parking on the 70-acre grounds is free. The gates lock 30 minutes after closing. Call for holiday hours before you drive over.
With small children, the Sandbox children’s museum serves ages 1 through 12. Its site says reservations are strongly suggested because it often reaches capacity. Shelter Cove Community Park has a playground and a boardwalk with Broad Creek views for the dry hour between showers.
Hilton Head Dolphin Tours
Dolphin cruises, kayak and paddleboard trips and fishing charters all leave from the island’s marinas. The island’s visitor site lists them as water activities. I would book the morning boat and compare departure times first.
Daufuskie Island is a half-day by water. It has no bridge. You reach it by ferry or water taxi from Hilton Head marinas, or from Old Town Bluffton, where the visitor site says reservations are required.
Hunting Island Lighthouse
Hunting Island State Park is a day trip up the coast, a bit more than an hour each way. It is worth it for the lighthouse. South Carolina Parks lists entry at $8 for adults and $4 for children 6 to 15. Children 5 and younger are free.
The park is open 6 am to 6 pm, extended to 9 pm during Daylight Saving Time. Climbing the lighthouse costs $5 per person, with the first climb at 9:30 am and the last at 4:30 pm.
There are 167 steps, and the page says the lighthouse may close at any time in unsafe weather. In early October 2026 the park also listed the bridge to Boneyard Beach as temporarily closed because of high tides. Confirm that before you plan around it, and download an offline map before the drive.

Hilton Head 3 Day Itinerary
One day: beach in the morning at one park, then lunch. Go to Harbour Town or the Coastal Discovery Museum when the sun gets high. End with a bike ride before dusk.
Day two: Pinckney Island early while it is cool. Spend the afternoon at a second beach, or on a dolphin cruise. Day three: Hunting Island for the lighthouse, or Daufuskie by water if you would rather skip the drive.
Keep one day loose for weather. Plans on a barrier island move with the tide and the wind.
Is Hilton Head worth visiting?
I would say yes if you want an easy, low-key beach week. You need to be fine with a planned, gated island. It is a poor fit if you want nightlife or a walkable boardwalk strip.
The beaches are public and the bike paths are good. The planning cost is parking and gate passes, not distance. Pick one beach, one lighthouse and one rainy-day backup, and the rest takes care of itself.
Is Hilton Head good for toddlers?
Yes. The Town lists playgrounds at Driessen and Islanders and a pavilion at both. Lifeguards cover the designated swim areas from April 1 through September 30. Islanders is closed through May 31, 2027, so use Driessen or Coligny.
Are dogs allowed on Hilton Head beaches?
Yes, on a calendar. From October through March they are allowed all day, on a leash or under voice control. From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day they are not allowed between 10 am and 5 pm. Pinckney Island refuge does not allow dogs at all.
Do you need a car on Hilton Head Island?
Not for every day. The Town’s pathways run more than 72 miles, so a bike covers the beaches and the museum. Pinckney Island is a drive, Sea Pines needs a gate pass, and Hunting Island is a day trip. The fare-free Breeze Trolley runs early April through Labor Day, so plan without it in fall and winter.
Is Coligny Beach free?
Yes, for parking. The Town says Coligny is the only beach park with free parking, year-round. The beach itself is public. You still pay for anything you rent or eat nearby.
