A good Venice itinerary for 3 days puts St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace on day 1, the Grand Canal, Rialto and Dorsoduro on day 2, and the lagoon islands on day 3. Book the Basilica and the Peggy Guggenheim ahead, buy one transit pass, and skip the access-fee panic: the city’s own site says the 2026 trial ended on July 26. Every price and rule below was read on an official page on October 2, 2026.
We have travelled all over Europe, and Venice is the city where I would sort out logistics before sights. There are no cars, every bridge has steps, and the best hours belong to whoever gets up early. With a carry-on and a plan it is one of the easiest big cities to enjoy. With a hard-shell suitcase it is a three-day workout.
Venice 3 Day Itinerary
Venice runs on reservations, not distances. The walking is short and the queues are not, so the plan below is built around the bookings that matter. Euro prices come from the operators’ own pages, checked October 2, 2026, and each is named in the sections that follow.
| Day | Plan | Ticket or pass | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, Campanile | Booked Basilica slot; St. Mark’s Square Museums ticket | Basilica €10; museums €30; bell tower €15 |
| Day 2 | Rialto, Grand Canal by vaporetto, Accademia, Peggy Guggenheim, Dorsoduro | 24-hour transit pass; Guggenheim time slot | Pass €25; Guggenheim €17 |
| Day 3 | Murano, Burano, Torcello | Same pass, or a 72-hour pass for all three days | 72 hours €45 |
Venice Access Fee
Venice is not charging its day-tripper access fee right now. The city’s access-fee site says the 2026 trial period ended, the fee stopped applying on July 27, and any measures for later years are up to the city’s governing bodies. That was the wording on October 2, 2026.
During the 2026 trial the fee applied only on listed days between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., from April 3 through July 26. It cost €5 if paid by the fourth day before arrival and €10 after that. Children under 14 were exempt, overnight guests in the city’s lodging claimed an exemption voucher, and the minor lagoon islands such as Murano, Burano and Torcello sat outside it.
I would check that site again before booking flights, because a fee that returns would apply per person per day. Overnight stays carry a separate charge. The city’s tourist-tax page lists €1 to €5 per person per night for the first five consecutive nights, with children under 10 exempt.
Venice Day 1
Start in the square, and start early. The Basilica’s ticket site lists €10 for an individual visit, €20 with the Pala d’Oro and €30 for the full ticket, with children under 11 admitted free. I would book the slot first and build the morning around it.

Entry is only at your booked time, with 15 minutes of tolerance either side. Tickets carry a name, so bring ID, and cover your shoulders and knees. Hours run Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. with the last entrance at 4:45 p.m., and on Sundays and holy days from 2 p.m.
The Campanile is the quick win. The bell tower ticket is €15 and the tower stays open until 8:45 p.m. from April to October, then 7:15 p.m. from November to March. Go up late in the afternoon and look down on the Doge’s Palace roof.
You will share the square with tour groups. Since August 1, 2024 the city caps accompanied groups at 25 people, bans loudspeakers and asks guides to keep groups off bridges and bridge ramps, in the historic center and on Murano, Burano and Torcello.
Doge’s Palace Tickets
The St. Mark’s Square Museums ticket includes the Doge’s Palace and costs €30, or €25 when bought online 30 or more days ahead, on the palace’s ticket page. Reduced tickets are €15 or €13, and the Museum Pass is €40 with six months of validity.

From April 1 to October 31 the palace opens 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the last entrance at 6 p.m. From November 1 to March 31 it closes at 6 p.m., with the last entrance at 5 p.m. Closing operations start 30 minutes before closing.
The Bridge of Sighs hangs over the canal behind the palace. Photograph it from the quay outside, then spend the rest of the afternoon on the Grand Canal side of town.
Venice Day 2
Day 2 is the walking day, so wear shoes that grip wet stone. Cross the Rialto Bridge in the morning, when the stalls on it are still half asleep, and wander the food markets just beyond it. Then take a boat down the canal and spend the afternoon in Dorsoduro.
Venice Vaporetto
The Grand Canal is the classic ride in the city, and the slow Line 1 stops everywhere along it. The operator’s vaporetto page lists a 75-minute ticket at €9.50, then €25 for 24 hours, €35 for 48 hours, €45 for 72 hours and €65 for seven days.
Validate before you board, at the machines on the dock. The operator’s fines page says to validate before boarding and again each time you change service. Skip it and you owe a penalty plus the fare, paid to the inspector or within five days at an authorized agency.
Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Get off near the Accademia, see the old masters if you like, and walk to the Guggenheim. The museum’s visit page lists daily hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Tuesdays and December 25, with the last entrance at 5 p.m. Adults pay €17 from May 1, 2026, and time-slot tickets are the advised route.

Bags, backpacks and suitcases are not allowed inside, and photos are fine without flash. Swap days 2 and 3 if day 2 lands on a Tuesday. Finish on the Zattere waterfront with the Salute across the water.
How Much Is a Gondola Ride?
The city’s gondola page sets €90 for 30 minutes between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., and €110 for 35 minutes from 7 p.m., for up to five people. Rates were approved by city resolution on April 20, 2023.
Treat it as a 30-minute ride, not transport. Agree the price and duration before you step in, and use the official rate as your benchmark.
Venice Day Trip Islands
Day 3 is a half-day by water bus from Fondamente Nove. Line 12 runs Murano, Mazzorbo, Burano and, on request, Torcello. The ACTV timetable we read lists departures every 20 minutes from 10:00 to 17:40, Monday to Saturday, and a Torcello stop needs a phone request at least 20 minutes ahead. Check the current timetable before you go.

Murano is for glass, and you can see furnaces working. Burano is for painted houses and a slow lunch. Torcello is the quiet one, with the old cathedral and not much else, which is the point.
The islands sat outside the 2026 access fee, and your transit pass covers the boats. Start at Murano, end on Torcello, and be back on the main island for dinner.
What Is Acqua Alta?
Acqua alta is the tidal peak that floods low parts of Venice, mostly in autumn and winter, according to the city’s visitor pages. St. Mark’s Square is one of the first places to go under. Plan a dry-route morning and keep your shoes in mind.
The city’s siren page explains the signals by counting tones. One prolonged tone means +110 cm, two rising tones +120 cm, three +130 cm and four +140 cm or more.
The Centro Previsioni e Segnalazioni Maree publishes forecasts in centimeters on the comune’s site, with a multi-day outlook and set update times. I would check it the night before and again at breakfast.
Marco Polo Airport to Venice
The airport’s transport page lists four ways in. ACTV bus line 5 and the ATVO express run to Piazzale Roma, Alilaguna runs boats to the historic center, and private water taxis serve the dock. Alilaguna’s fare page lists €18 one way, with one heavy bag and one hand bag included and €4 for each extra piece.
Time-limited transit tickets do not cover the airport connections, so buy those separately. Then comes the part nobody warns you about: every bridge has steps. A carry-on is the sane choice, and our carry-on only packing list and carry-on backpack guide cover it.
Is It Worth Staying in Mestre?
It is a trade-off, not a mistake. ACTV line 15 and the ATVO express connect the airport with Mestre station, and mainland rooms generally cost less. You give up the empty streets at 7 a.m. and the walk home after dinner.
I would stay on the island for a three-day trip and treat Mestre as the fallback when island rooms price you out. If you are also heading to Tuscany, our Florence itinerary covers the next stop.
Venice FAQ
Do you have to pay to enter Venice?
Not right now. The city’s access-fee site says the 2026 trial ended and the fee stopped applying on July 27, and the overnight-stay tourist tax is a separate charge.
Is 3 days in Venice enough?
Yes, three days is the length I would plan for. It covers the square, the Grand Canal, Dorsoduro and the lagoon islands without rushing.
How do you validate a vaporetto ticket?
Use the validator machine at the dock before you board, and again each time you change service. The operator says to validate before going on board.
