An Islamorada itinerary works best over two days: one for the water, one for the marina and the marine park. The village sits between mile marker 90 and mile marker 73 in the Florida Keys. The Islamorada Chamber of Commerce calls it the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. Robbie’s Marina and Theater of the Sea anchor the two days, and Anne’s Beach fills the gap for free.

I grew up boating these waters as a kid in South Florida. I still go back to snorkel and dive at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park up the road in Key Largo. The Keys change speed the farther south you drive, and Islamorada is where the pace first slows from Miami traffic to island time.

The fee math below explains why two days beats a rushed one-day pass through. A single day also forces a choice between the marine park and the water. Islamorada charges for both separately.

What a day of Islamorada attractions costs two adults

StopPer-person feeCost for two adults
Anne’s BeachFree$0
Robbie’s Marina tarpon feeding$2.50 dock fee plus $5 per bait bucket$15.00 (two dock fees, two buckets)
Theater of the Sea general admission$49.95$99.90
Total for one attraction-heavy day $114.90

Robbie’s charges $2.50 per person just to walk onto the dock, per Robbie’s Marina’s own pricing. A bucket of bait fish runs $5 more. Theater of the Sea’s general admission costs $49.95 for anyone 11 and older, per the park’s ticket page, and $32.95 for ages 3 to 10. That price covers dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows plus a lagoon beach. Split those two stops and a free beach morning across two days, and neither day feels rushed.

How far is Islamorada from Miami?

Islamorada sits roughly 79 miles from downtown Miami by the mile-marker math above. That puts the drive at about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours with no stops. Because it is shorter than the push to Marathon or Key West, Islamorada also works as a day trip on its own. However, most visitors still stay overnight, since reef trips and charters run early and the water is calmer before the afternoon wind builds. Weekend traffic on US-1 south of Florida City can also add 20 to 30 minutes, so an early start avoids the worst of it.

Robbie’s Tarpon Feeding

Start at Robbie’s Marina, mile marker 77.5 on the bay side, where the tarpon gather under the dock. The marina is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, per its own site, so a morning visit beats the midday crowd. Pay the $2.50 dock fee, buy a $5 bucket of bait, and watch the tarpon and pelicans compete for it.

Book a snorkel or fishing charter for the afternoon. Local operators run trips out of Islamorada’s marinas most days, and morning bookings tend to sell out first in winter. Confirm the meeting dock and gear list directly with the operator when you book, since it varies boat to boat.

Anne’s Beach Florida Keys

Spend the morning at Anne’s Beach, mile marker 73.5. It has 300 feet of boardwalk, six pavilions and a restroom, per the Village of Islamorada’s parks page. It is open sunrise to sunset at no charge. The water stays shallow a long way out, which is why it draws families with small kids more than sunbathers looking for deep water.

Instead, save Theater of the Sea for the afternoon. Park hours run 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the year, per the park’s own admission page, with the last show starting at 2 p.m. Plan two to three hours there for the dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows plus the lagoon beach.

Alligator Reef Snorkeling

Alligator Reef sits a few miles offshore from Islamorada. The region’s own tourism board points to it, along with the wreck of the San Pedro, as a snorkel and dive site for the area. Local operators also run half-day trips out to both, and most depart from marinas along the bay side of US-1. Because boat capacity is limited, book directly with an operator instead of waiting until you arrive, since prices and schedules change by season and by boat.

I have snorkeled and dived at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park just up the road. The same rule applies here: check the wind forecast before you book. A north wind kicks up chop on the reef side and can cancel a trip outright. Morning trips also tend to run calmer than afternoon ones, since the sea breeze typically builds through the day.

Islamorada Sportfishing Capital of the World

Islamorada earns that title from a working fleet, not a slogan. The Islamorada Chamber of Commerce describes a larger fishing fleet per square mile here than anywhere else in the world. As a result, charters chase tarpon, bonefish and permit on the flats, and sailfish and mahi-mahi offshore, often on the same day different boats leave the same marina. Backcountry guides work the grass flats west of US-1, while offshore boats run out through Islamorada’s deeper cuts instead.

A flats trip and an offshore trip are different days, different gear and different money. So pick one focus per visit instead of trying to fit both into a single afternoon. First-time visitors usually do better with a half-day flats trip, since it stays closer to shore if the weather turns.

Islamorada to Key West Distance

Islamorada sits about 27 miles north of Marathon by the same mile-marker math, roughly 35 to 40 minutes of driving. Key West runs another 54 miles south of Marathon, closer to 1 hour 15 minutes past that. Together, Miami to Key West through Islamorada covers about 160 miles and 3.5 to 4 hours of driving with no stops. So a two-day Islamorada stay fits naturally into a longer Overseas Highway trip instead of forcing a separate visit.

Islamorada Tips

Skip Library Beach Park at mile marker 81.5 if you are traveling with a dog. It does not allow them, unlike Anne’s Beach, per the village’s parks page. A same-day combination of Robbie’s and Theater of the Sea plus beach time is also worth skipping. Between the drive, the dock and the show schedule, you will spend more time in a parking lot than in the water.

Late August through October is the riskiest stretch to book without a backup plan. That window sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season NOAA defines as June 1 through November 30. Motorized personal watercraft and jet skis are barred from most of Islamorada’s public parks and preserves too. So do not plan to launch one from Anne’s Beach or Library Beach Park.

Islamorada Activities

A lot of Overseas Highway traffic treats Islamorada as a bathroom stop between Key Largo and Marathon. Still, that undersells it. Two full attractions, a free beach and an offshore reef put a genuine day and a half of activity into one 17-mile stretch of highway. That is more concentrated than most of the rest of the Keys. Readers cross-shopping the two closest villages can see how the fee structure and pace compare in our Key Largo vs. Islamorada comparison. Anyone snorkeling Pennekamp first should check what a John Pennekamp reef trip costs before adding a second reef day here.

Islamorada Travel Guide

I have spent enough afternoons on Florida Keys docks to know the tarpon show at Robbie’s is worth the $2.50. So the two-day split above is the version that does not feel rushed. Book Robbie’s and a reef or fishing charter for day one. Keep day two for Anne’s Beach and Theater of the Sea. Treat the overnight in between as the reason to come here, instead of just passing through on US-1.

Frequently asked questions about Islamorada

How many days in Islamorada?

Two days covers the marina, a reef or fishing trip, and a beach afternoon without rushing. One day works if you pick either the water or the attractions, not both.

Is Islamorada or Key Largo better?

Both work for a first Keys trip. Key Largo centers on one destination in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, while Islamorada spreads activity across a marina, a marine park and open flats, per our Key Largo vs. Islamorada comparison.

Do you need a reservation for Robbie’s Marina?

No reservation is needed to walk onto the dock and feed the tarpon. Charter fishing and reef trips booked through individual operators do require advance booking, especially in winter high season.

Is Anne’s Beach good for kids?

Anne’s Beach suits young kids. The water stays shallow well past the shoreline, and the 300-foot boardwalk with six pavilions makes it easy to stage a family visit, per the Village of Islamorada.

When is the best time to visit Islamorada?

Winter and spring fall outside the Atlantic hurricane season NOAA defines as June through November, so those months are the more predictable window for a fishing or snorkeling trip.
